In the 1850 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 26-year-old Kentucky-born farmer Cornelius VanNuys owns $2,000 worth of real estate. He and his 31-year-old New Jersey-born wife Jane [Ditmars] VanNuys have in their household their Indiana-born children, 4-year-old Electa J and 1-year-old Sarah Bell [sic], and 13-year-old Indiana-born Francis C Williams, whose relationship to the family is unknown. In the 1860 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 35-year-old Kentucky-born farmer Cornelius VanNuys owns $5,600 worth of real estate and $1,500 worth of personal property. He and his 40-year-old New Jersey-born wife Jane [Ditmars] VanNuys have in their household their Indiana-born children, 8-year-old Chauncy L and 3-year-old Cornelius, and Jane's 21-year-old Indiana-born farm laborer Edward Ditmars, who owns $600 worth of personal property.
