He and his 30-year-old Indiana born wife, Mariah [Orrell] McCaslin have in their household his daughter by his second wife, Sarah Hutton, 14-year-old Martha J McCaslin, and their children, 9-year-old Mary A, 7-year-old Charles B, 5-year-old Ionia B, and 2-year-old John D McCaslin. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Christal [Crystal], Montgomery, Arkansas, 53-year-old farmer, James McCaslin [transcribed as Mc Caslin] and his 41-year-old wife Mariah have in their household their children 18-year-old Mariah A, 16-year-old Charles B, 14-year-old Iona B, 12-year-old John D, 8-year-old Myrta , 6-year-old James W and 3-year-old Mariah M. Charles and John are farm laborers. Iona, John and Myrta have attended school in the past year. The move from Indiana to Arkansas took place after the 1870 census but before 1872 when Myrta was born in Arkansas. The McCaslins are living next door to Mariahs brother 35-year-old Thomas Orrell, his 18-year-old pregnant wife Mary C and their 2-year-old daughter Doria A. In the 1900 US Federal Census for Lee, Garland, Arkansas, 31-year-old [sic] Indiana-born farmer David [sic] and his 28-year-old wife Arkansas-born Abdie [sic] [Melissa Abigail Rawls] McCaslin have been married nine years and have had four children. All are living. These Arkansas-born children are 8-year-old Mary, 6-year-old William, 3-year-old Edna and one-year-old Anie [sic]. None of the children have attended school in the past year. David and Abdie can read, write and speak English. David is farming land he owns, free of mortgage. David's parents were born in Indiana, Adbie's parents in Mississippi, and the children's father in Indiana and their mother in Arkansas. In the 1920 US Federal Census for Lee, Garland, Arkansas, 51-year-old [sic] Indiana-born farmer David [sic] and his 47-year-old Arkansas-born wife Abbagal M [sic] [Melissa Abigail Rawls] McCaslin have in their household their Arkansas-born children, 16-year old Thelma B, 13-year-old Lelan J [sic], 10-year-old Jessie I, and 8-year-old James C [sic]. The family is living on a farm on Social Hill Road in home David owns, free of mortgage. All the children have attended school in the past year. David is illiterate, Abigail, Thelma, Leland, and Jessie can read and write. Everyone speaks English. David is doing general farming. David's father was born in Indiana and his mother in Maryland [sic]; Abigail's father was born in Arkansas and her mother in Mississippi [sic]; the children's father was born in Indiana and their mother in Arkansas. In the 1930 US Federal Census for Valley, Garland, Arkansas, 61-year-old Indiana-born farmer Dave [sic] and his 57-year-old Arkansas-born wife Malissa A [sic] [Melissa Abigail Rawls] McCaslin were married when he was 22- and she was 18-years-old. They have in their household two of their Arkansas-born sons, 23-year-old farm laborer John L and 18-year-old farm laborer James K. James has attended school in the past year. Dave owns the house they are living in, worth $2000. They have a radio. Everyone is literate and speaks English. David's parents were born in Indiana, Melissa's parents in Mississippi, and the children's father in Indiana and their mother in Arkansas.
