Shared note

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Vernon, Jackson, Indiana (Post Office Retreat), 27-year-old miller Rich [Richard] McCasland has real estate worth $1,600 and personal property worth $250. He and his 21-year-old wife M. Ellen [Matilda Ellen Wilson] have in their household their daughters, 2-year-old Alice [Mary Alice] and 6-month old R. Catherine [Rachel Catherine], and 10-year-old Alabama Hudson, whose relationship to the family is not known. Will McCasland, who may be Richards nephew William A McCaslin, is living next door with the John M Miller family. Will runs the engine for the mill.

In the the 1870 US Federal Census for Marion, Jennings, Indiana, 39-year-old farmer Moses Briges [Bridges] has $1,500 worth of real estate and $500 of personal property. He can read but not write. He and his 27-year-old wife (a second marriage for both of them) have a blended household of his children, 16-year-old Shelby (who works on the farm), 13-year-old Charles, 11-year-old Benjamin, 7-year-old Willie, and 3-year-old Thomas Bridges, her step-daughters, 13-year-old Alice [Mary Alice] and 11-year-old Cassey [Rachel Catherine] McCaslin and her children 5-year-old Ella and 3-year-old John McCaslin. Shelby, Charles, Benjamin, Cassey and Ella have all attended school in the past year.

From a scrapbook of clippings from Jennings County newspapers (transcribed by Sheila Kell):
MARRIED
OSBORN-McCASLIN - On Thursday, May31st, 1877, by Rev. J. C. Burt, Mr. Richard Osborn to Miss Alice McCaslin.
We wish the young couple a long and happy married life.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Vernon, Jennings, Indiana, 23-year-old cabinet maker Richard and his 22-year-old wife Alice [Mary Alice McCaslin] Osborn have a 2-year-old daughter, Mary E. Richards parents were born in Ohio although he was born in Indiana.

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Vernon, Jennings, 42-year-old Carpenter Richard T and his 42-year-old wife Mary Alice [McCasland] married when both of them were 23-years old. [This is incorrect, they were both 20-years old]. They have had two children but only one is living, 10-year-old Ruth F. The family is living in a house on Jackson Street in the second Ward of Vernon city, which is owned free and clear of mortgage.

In the 1910 US Federal Census for Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana 52-year-old merchant Richard Osborn is the owner of a candy store. He and his 52-year-old wife Alice [Mary Alice McCasland] have been married 31 years and have had two children, but only one is living, 20-year-old Ruth F [Osborn] Johnson. Ruth married 21-year-old laundry wagon driver Oscar Johnson in 1908 and they have a one-year-old son, Roger L Johnson. This two generation family is living in a rented house at 1322 Olive Street.

In the 1920 US Federal Census for Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, 62-year-old cabinet maker Richard T Osborne [Osborn] and his 62-year-old wife are living in a rented house at 2232 Michigan Street. Also living at this address are 28-year-old laundry driver Charles Johnson and his 26-year-old wife Ethel. Whether Charles is related to the Osborns son-in-law, Oscar Johnson is unknown.

Richard apparently died before 1930 as Mary Alice is listed as a widow on that census.

In the 1930 US Federal Census for San Bernardino, San Bernardino, California, 63-year-old Railroad Conductor Fred A Reynolds is married to 39-year-old Ruth F [Osborn Johnson]. This is a second marriage for both of them as Fred was 24 at the time of his first marriage and Ruth was 17 years old. Living with Fred and Ruth is her son, 21-year-old Roger L Johnson, and Ruths 73-year-old widowed mother whose name is listed incorrectly as Olive M Osborn. It should be Mary Alice Osborn. Apparently the person giving the census information didnt know her name. This three generation family is living at 850 H Street in a house Fred owns, which is worth $5,000. The family has a radio.

Mary Alice McCaslin Osborn died on 27 Jan 1938 in San Bernardino County, California. Her California Death certificate number is 4930.
