In the 1900 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 42-year-old Margaret E [Alexander] Devore and her husband 37-year-old Judson Devore have been married 15 years. They have had four children, 15-year-old Flora S, 11-year-old Thomas A, 2-year-old Carmel J and 1-year-old Mable B, and all four are living.

In the 1910 US Federal Census for Needham, Johnson, Indiana, 47-year-old farmer Judson and his 50-year-old wife Maggie E [Margaret Elizabeth Alexander] Devore have been married 26 years. They have had four children, one (Mabel) has died and one, 12-year-old Carmel, is still at home.

On 5 Jun 1918, when 21-year-old Carmel J Devore registers for the WWI Draft, he states that his residence address is RR#5, Franklin, Indiana, that he was born 21 August 1896 in Franklin, Indiana, and there for is a natural citizen of the United States, that his father was born in Johnson County, Indiana. He is self-employed and place of employment is Franklin, Johnson, Indiana. His nearest relative is Edith Devore [his wife] of the RR#5 address. He is medium height and build, with blue eyes and light brown hair. He has no disabilities which would preclude him from the military.

In the 1920 US Federal Census for Needham, Johnson, Indiana, 56-year-old Judson Devore is still doing "General Farming." He and his 61-year-old wife Margaret [Alexander] Devore are living next door to their son 23-year-old Carmel J, their 24-year-old daughter-in-law Edith [Doane] and their grandchildren, 3-year 8-month old Wanetta [Juanita] and one-year, 7-month old Herschel.

In the 1930 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 33-year old Indiana-born Carmel Devore and his 34-year-old Indiana-born wife were married when he was 18- and she was 19-years-old. They have in their household their Indiana-born children, 13-year-old Wynetta [Juanita], 11-year-old Hershell, 8-year-old Leon and one-year, 7-month-old Richard, and Carmel's 67-year-old Indiana-born widowed father, Judson Devore. All children, except Richard have attended school in the past year. The family is living at 400 Hosingham St in a house, which Carmel owns, worth $1,000. They have a radio. Carmel is a shipping clerk in a garment factory and has worked on the last regularly scheduled work day. He has not served in the military. Everyone's parents were born in Indiana, with the exception of Judson, whose father was born in Kentucky and his mother in West Virginia.

On 22 April 1942, when 45-year-old Carmel J Devore registered for the draft, he was employed by Standard Oil (indiana) L.T. Short Agency, and living at 400 South Hougham, Franklin, Johnson, Indiana with his wife. Mrs. Alma Edith Devore ("the person who will always know your address"). Their telephone number was Franklin 1031. Carmel was described as 5 feet 5 Inches, 150 pounds, with blue eyes, brown hair and a ruddy complexion.
