Shared note

In the 1850 US Federal Census for Nineveh, Johnson County, Indiana, Polly (Mary) [Parkhurst] Sellers has married Reuben Nay after the death of her first husband, Samuel Sellers. This appears to be a blended family of mine, yours and ours. Living with Reuben and Mary are Reubens children, Joseph L (age 17 and a farm laborer), and Frances Jane (age 16), Marys children Elizabeth (age 12), Sarah Ann (age 8), and Louisa C (Caroline Louisa, age 7) and their children, Margaret (age 4) and Roland T (agr 5 months). All the children are listed with the last name of Nay, so this is my best guess at assigning them to the correct parents. In the 1860 census, both Elizabeth and Louisa (Carrie) are listed as Sellers so I know their parentage is correct.

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Nineveh, Johnson County, Indiana, Polly (Mary) [Parkhurst Sellers] Nay and Reuben Nay have in their blended family their three children, Margaret E (age 13), Reuben S (age 8), and Elijah M (age 5) Nay and two daughters from her first marriage, Elizabeth (age 21) and Louisa C (Caroline Louisa, age 16) Sellers. Polly cannot read nor write.

John Calvin McCaslin and Caroline Sellers marry 9 Nov 1863 in Johnson County, Indiana.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Erie, Neosho, Kansas, 32-year-old farmer John McCaslin has $1000 worth of real estate and $300 worth of personal property. He and his 24-year-old wife Carrie [Sellers] McCaslin have in their household their sons, 5-year-old Otis ad 3-year-old Bertie.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Chetopa, Neosho, Kansas, 43-year-old John McCaslin and his 37-year-old wife Carie [Carrie Sellers] have in their household their children, 15-year-old Otis, 13-year-old Burdes [Bertie], 9-year-old Grace, 7-year-old Sylvia, 4-year-old Ella, and 1-year-old Chance [Chauncey].All the children except Ella and Chauncey are attending school.

In the 1885 Kansas State Census, 47-year-old carpenter J. C. McCaslin and his 41-year-old wife Carrie have in their household their children, 20-year-old clerk Otis, 18-year-old Bertus L, 15-year-old Grace, 12-year-old Sylvia, and 8-year-old Nellie.

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Argentine, Wyandotte, Kansas, 67-year-old carpenter John C McCaslin and his 55-year-old wife Carrie [Sellers] have been married 36 years. They have had seven children, but only four are living. Two of them 33-year-old day laborer Bert and 24-year-old milinery store clerk Sylvia are living with them. The family is living at 334 Third Street in a house they own free of mortgage.

In the 1905 Kansas State Census for Argentine, Wyandotte, Kansas, 67-year-old J. C. McCaslin and his 61-year-old wife Carrie have in their household two of their children, 38-year B. L. and 27-year-old Sylvia. The family owns their house free of mortgage.

In the 1910 US Federal Census for 3-Wd Kansas, Wyandotte, Kansas, Carrie is a 66-year-old widow living with her son, Bert. She has told the census taker that she has born four children and four are living, but this doesnt seem to be correct as she had six children recorded on the 1880 census. However, Johns questionaire in his pension application, filled out on 9 May 1898 states that his four living children are Otis, Bertis, Sylvia and Nellie. This indicates that Grace and Chauncey have died before that date.

In the 1915 Kansas State Census for Chanute, Neosho, Kansas, 39-year-old widow Nellie [McCaslin} Wilson has in her household her children, 14-year-old Sylvia, 13-year-old Fayette, and 11-year-old Eugene, and her 71-year-old mother Cary [Carrie Sellers] McCaslin. Nellie owns the home the family is living in. Nellie is listed as Housekeeper, the children are in school, and Carrie is listed as Retired. Marjorie is missing from the household and may be presumed to have died.

In the 1920 US Federal Census for Kansas City Ward 13, Jackson, Missouri, 41-year-old Ohio-born Wilber [Wilbert] is living at 3824 NW Indiana in a house he owns (with mortgage), with his 43-year-old Kansas-born wife Silvia [Sylvia] and his 76-year-old Illinois-born widowed mother-in-law Carrie Sellers McCaslin. He is a superintendent of a manufacturing plant. Everyone can read, write and speak English. Wilberts parents were born in Virginia; Sylvia's father was born in Indiana and her mother in Illinois; Carrie's father was born in Kentucky and her mother in Tennessee. Everyone in the household is listed as white.

Caroline [Sellers] McCaslin died 20 Feb in Chanute, Neosho, Kansas and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Section 145 Block 9 Lot 12 Space 7. (Find A Grave Memorial# 81983952)
