In the 1810 US Federal Census for Township Not Stated, Shelby, Kentucky, David McCaslin has in his household three males under 10 (Newton, Hervey and David), two males 10 through 15 (Richard and Andrew), two males 16 through 25 (James and George), one male 26 through 44 (himself), one female under 10 (Peggy) , one female 10 through 15 (Elizabeth), one female 16 through 25 (?), and one female 26 through 44 (his wife Esther Baker Shillideay McCaslin)

In the 1820 US Federal Census for Township Not Stated, Shelby, Kentucky, David McCaslin has in his household two boys under 10 (William and Allen, by his second wife, Mary [Marrs/Mears Montgomery McCaslin), one boy between 10 and 16 (Newton, by his first wife, Esther Shillideay McCaslin), two males 16 to 26 (probably David and Hervey, by his first wife, Esther Shillideay McCaslin), himself (45 and over), two girls 10 to 16 (Peggy, his daughter by Esther, and Mildred B, Mary's daughter by Stephen Montgomery). He also has three slaves, one male under 14, one female under 14 and one female between 26 and 45. There are three people engaged in farming and one in manufacturing.

On 16 January 1824, in Shelby County, Kentucky, Hervey McCaslin married his step-sister Mildred Montgomery.

His farmstead is next to that of his Uncle, George King who is Hervey's father David Wasson McCaslin's half-brother.

In the 1850 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, Hervey (recorded as Harvey by the census taker) is a 48-year-old farmer with $6,000 worth of property, more than any one else recorded on this page. In his household are his wife, Mildred (age 42), his daughters, Elizabeth (age 24, born in Kentucky) and Rachel E (age 17, born in Indiana), and his sons, William (age 20 and a farmer), Thomas A (age 15 and a farmer), Joseph B (age 12) and George (age 6). All Herveys sons were born in Indiana. The youngest three, Thomas, Joseph and George, have all attended school in the past year. The birthplaces of Elizabeth (Kentucky) and William D (Indiana) indicate that the family moved to Indiana between 1825 and 1829. Hervey's and Mildred's son Stephen Montgomery cannot be found on on the 1850 census as he died on 23 Jul 1845, according to the Montgomery Family Bible.

On 28 Aug 1850, Mildred died, and on 31 December 1851, Hervey married Mrs. Sarah Price Jeffery. She had been married twice previously to a Mr Carson and to Robert Jeffery.

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Franklin Township, Johnson County, Hervey McCaslin (spelled Harvey by the census taker) is a prosperous 57-year-old farmer with real estate worth $7,000 and personal property worth $3,200. In his household are his second wife, Sarah P [Price Carson Jeffery] McCaslin (age 47), his sons by his first wife Mildred, Joseph B (age 21) and George (age 18), his son by Sarah, Hervey (age 7), Sarahs son, James Carson (age 12) and Ellen Jackson, a 16-year-old domestic. Joseph and George are listed as farmers who each have $3,000 worth of real estate and $500 worth of personal property.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Franklin Ward 1, Johnson County Indiana, Hervey McCaslin is a very prosperous retired farmer, with real estate worth $18,000 and personal property worth $3,100. In his household are his wife, Sarah P [Price] (age 58, keeping house), their 16-year-old son, Hervey and 18-year-old Susan Stumet, their domestic servant.

Hervey George McCaslin Sr died 12 Sep 1870 in Frankin, Johnson, Indiana and was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Franklin, Johnson, Indiana (Find A Grave Memorial# 9526295). His name is misspelled as Harvey on his tombstone.
