Shared note

Although family sources give his name as Allen, the McCausland tree says his name was Elton W McCaslin as does the 1870, 1880 and 1900 Census. I think that the family records are probably wrong.

The 1870 census for Salem, Marion, Oregon, shows Elton (age 2) in the household of his father John (listed as J.W.) as a 40 year-old lumberman who is doing very well as he has real estate worth $2000 and personal property worth $10.000. The other people in the household are his mother, Jane (age 27 and keeping house) and his brothers, Charles (age 6) and William Rollin (listed as R., age 7 months).

When John and Jane died in 1878, John's brother, Wosson, took the three boys (14, 11 & 9) back to Indiana and raised them along with their own seven children. The 1880 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana confirms the family story that Charles, Elton, and William lived with Wossons family after their parents died.

A Dastardly Murder.
A letter to relatives here from
Rollin McCaslin of Kansas City, Mo.,
gives details of the death of his
brother, Elton at Amarilla [sic], Texas,
the latter part of September.
Elton had been in charge of an
entrance gate at the Amarilla [sic] fair.
With his assistants he was closing
the gates in the evening whe he
was approached by a man who car-
ried a club who said he had been
given the wrong change for his ad-
mission money earlier in the day.
Elton invited the man to accom-
pany him to the office and if a mis-
take was discovered it would be
made right. For reply the man
struck him on the head with the
club fracturing his skull from
which he died. The man was later
captured and is alleged to have con-
fesed that he had not been short-
changed, but hope to get some
money by saying he had. The body
was taken to Union Grove, Wis.,
for burial and Mrs. McCaslin has
temporarily gone to the home of
her parents at South Haven, Mich.
Deceased stood very high in the
regard of the people of Amarilla [sic],
and he was associated with some of
the leading men in that comunity
in a business venture. The trans-
portation of his body to Wisconsin
and that of the family was paid for
by his associates and general was
the grief at his tragic death.
Elton was the youngest son of
John McCaslin, who died in Oregon [sic],
who was a brother of the late Wos-
son McCaslin, who resided many
years west of Franklin. At the death
of his brother, Charles [sic John] Wos-
son McCaslin brought Elton and
his brother Charles, now a leading pas-
tor at Minneapolis, and Rollin, of
Kansas City, to his home here and
educated them. They grew to
young manhood here and are well
known to many Franklin and Hope-
well people.
The Star is indebted to Mrs. M. M.
McCaslin for news of the death of
Elton.
