In the 1850 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, Harvey McCaslin (26) is married to Hannah Utter McCaslin (23) and has a 6 month-old daughter, Frances A. He is a farmer with property worth $2,000. His farmstead is near that of his cousin, Allen McCaslin.

In the 1865 Kansas State Census for Auburn, Shawnee, Kansas taken on 2 May, 41-year-old soldier Henry [Harvey] McCaslin is away at war, enlisted in the 15th Kansas Regiment, Company H. He owns real estate worth $300 and personal property worth $1,031. This census state that Harvey was born in Kentucky but that is incorrect. His 37-year-old Indiana-born wife Hannah A [Utter] McCaslin is managing the household which contains their children, 14-year-old Indiana-born Mary A, 9-year-old Iowa-born Flora B [Belle] and 3-year-old Kansas-born Milton and two unrelated people, 23-year-old C.S. Teacher Alan(?) J Barker, and 13-year-old Arkansas-born Samuel Henry who is black.

He and his 43-year-old wife Hannah Utter McCaslin have three children at home, 18-year-old Mary-born in Indiana, 15-year-old Belle-born in Iowa and 9-year-old Milton-born in Kansas. The birth place of Belle would indicate that the family was in Iowa during the 1860 census.

In the 1875 Kansas State Census for Burlingame, Osage, Iowa, 52-year-old Indiana-born H [Harvey] McCaslin owns $3,500 worth of real estate and $600 worth of personal property. He and his 48-year-old Indiana-born wife Hannah have their two youngest children, 19-year-old Iowa-born Bell [Belle] and 14-year-old Kansas-born Milton. Both Belle and Milton have attended school in the past year.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Buringame, Osage, Iowa, 56-year-old H. [Harvey] McCaslin is a retail grocer. He and his 52-year-old wife H.A. [Hannah A Utter] McCaslin have taken in boarders, Mr and Mrs W.D. Britton and grocery clerk Edgar Rulison. W.D. Britton is a RR material agent.
