In the 1920 US Federal Census for District 139, Central, Sebastian, Arkansas, 60-year-old Missouri-born farmer Charley [sic] and his 53-year-old Arkansas-born wife Gertrude [Biggs] Helms have in their household their unmarried daughter, 18-year-old Arkansas-born Magge [sic] M Helms, her son, 8-month old Arkansas-born Robert H Helms [McCaslin} and Gertrude's widowed mother, 75-year-old Arkansas-born Elisabeth [maiden name unknown] Riggs. The family is living in a rented house. Everyone but Robert can read, write and speak English. Charles' parents were born in Indiana; Gertrude's and Maggie's fathers were born in Missouri and their mothers in Arkansas; Robert's parents were born in Arkansas; Elisabeth's parents were born in Tennessee. In the 1930 US Federal Census for Fort Smith, Sebastian, Arkansas, 27-year-old Arkansas-born Albert and his 30-year-old Arkansas-born wife Maggie [Helms] McCaslin were married when he was 16- and she was 19-years old [1918-1919 sic, they married in 1921]. They have in their household, their Arkansas-born children, 11-year-old Robert H and 5-year-old A Eugene. The family is living in at house at 3103 Free Ferry Road, for which Albert pays $10 a month in rent. They do not have a radio. Robert has attended school in the past year. Everyone except A Eugene can read, write and speak English. Albert is a gardener for a private home and Maggie is a Laundress working out of their home. Both have worked on the last regularly scheduled work day. Albert has not served in the military. Albert's parents were born in Arkansas; Maggie's father was born in the United States and her mother in Missouri; the children's parents were born in Arkansas. When 19-year-old Robert Hugh McCaslin applies for his Social Security number on 22 Jul 1937, he is requesting a duplicate, having previously filled out a card. He states that his residence is 916 So 25th Street, Fort Smith [Sebastian], Arkansas. That he is working for the Black & White Cab at 915 No A Street, Fort Smith, Arkansas. He previously worked for Arkola Sand and Gravel in Van Buren. Robert was born 23 May 1919 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. His parents are Albert McCaslin and Maggie May Helms. On 6 May 1939, Robert McCaslin signed a marriage bond for $100 stating that Robert McCaslin and Ruth Cosand, both of Fort Smith, Sebastian, Arkansas, would marry within sixty days of the date of the bond. He then signed an affidavit stating that Ronert [sic] McCaslin, having arrived at the age of twenty years, and Ruth Cosand, having arrived at the age of twenty-four years, are now single, unmarried, and can legally contract marriage. A marriage license was issued to Mr Robert McCaslin, age twenty, and Mrs [sic] Ruth Cosand, age twenty-four, both of Fort Smith, Sebastian, Arkansas by the Sebastian County Deputy Clerk Jenny Bell. Robert and Ruth were married the same day by Rev Don Bias [?]. On the 1958 Kern County [California] Voter Registration List for Ford No 3 District, page 308, Robert H McCaslin and Mrs. Ruth McCaslin are recorded as living at 620 Taylor Street, Taft, Kern, California. They are Democrats. On the Bakersfield, Kern County [California] Voter Registration list for the 8 Nov 1960 General Election, Robert H McCaslin and Mrs. Ruth McCaslin are recorded as living at 321 Oleander Ave. He is a Democrat and she is a Republican. However, a Mrs Ruth McCaslin is recorded as a Democrat and as still living at 620 Taylor Street, Taft Kern, California. Fifty-one-year-old Arkansas-born Robert H McCaslin, born 23 May 1919 (SSDI states 1918), died 21 Aug 1970 in San Luis Obispo County, California. His last residence was Bakersfield, Kern, California 93309. He applied for his Social Security Number in Arkansas before 1951. |
