In the 1850 US Federal Census for Van Buren, Crawford, Arkansas, 28-year-old Tennessee-born farm laborer Frederic Temple is head of a household, which contains his 50-year-old Virginia-born widowed mother Mary [Lee] Temple and his Tennessee-born siblings, 19-year-old farm laborer Francis M, 15-year-old Mary, 12-year-old William and 9-year-old Eliza. Frederick owns no land of value. Mary Lee Temple is illiterate. In the 1860 US Federal Census for Cedar Creek, Crawford, Arkansas, 21-year-old Tennessee-born farmer William Temple owns $50 of personal property, but no land of value. He and his 19-year-old Virginia-born wife Phebe M [sic] [Henderson] Temple have in their household two Arkansas-born children, 4-year-old Mary E Seagraves and 3-year-old William Seagraves whose relationship to William and Phebe I do not know. William and Phebe are living next door to her parents and siblings. On 1 Jul 1862 William enrolled in Co D, 1st Ark. Vol. Cav. at Springfield, Missouri. He was mustered out on 23 Aug 1865 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Phebe died July, 1866. On 18 Feb 1867, William and Winnie were married by her brother, James McCaslin who was a Justice of the Peace. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Cedar Creek, Crawford, Arkansas, 33-year-old Tennessee-born farmer W M [sic William H] Temple owns $300 worth of real estate and $400 worth of personal property. He and his 32-year-old Arkansas-born wife Winny [sic Nancy] [McCaslin] Temple have in their household their Arkansas-born children, 2-year-old F M [Francis Marion] and 1-year-old B F [Benjamin Franklin]. William is a male citizen of the USA who is 21 years or older. On 15 May 1876, William Temple was granted a Homestead Land Patent of 120 Acres in Crawford County, Arkansas. The description of the land was: In the 1880 US Federal Census for Cedar Creek, Crawford, Arkansas, 41-year-old [sic] Tennessee-born farmer William and his 41-year-old [sic] Arkansas-born wife Winnie [Nancy McCaslin] Temple have in their household their Arkansas-born children, 12-year-old Francis and 10-year-old Benjamin, and William's 75-year-old [sic] Virginia-born widowed mother, Mary [Lee] Temple. Francis and Benjamin have attended school in the past year, but cannot read or write. William's father was born in Georgia and his mother in Virginia, Winnie's parents were born in Indiana [sic] Mary's parents were born in Virginia and the children's father in Tennessee and their mother in Arkansas. Applied for a pension 15 Jul 1890, letter of rejection sent 23 Sep 1893. William reapplied. One of the pieces of information asked for was an affidavit to prove that he had not served in the Confederate Army. On 4 Apr 1898, William Temple filed an affidavit for his Civil War Pension stating that " I was not in the confederate Army. I was in a militia Company Early in 1862. James Brown was Captain of the Company, James King Col. later on this same James King Commanded a Regiment in the Confederate Army. This I was not in having previously left the Country to avoid being Conscripted in the Confederate Army. I do not know the letter of the Compamy as I was but a Short time with the Company." On another form William lists the names of his "comrades" in his Company of the Arkansas Volunteer Cavalry. They are W Knotts, J Yoes, J W McCaslin, G W McCaslin and R Centers. William was rejected for a pension again on 1 Mar 1898. On 10 Jul 1890, his new application for a pension states that he has appointed James Tanner, a Washington DC lawyer as his attorney. James McCaslin signs this document as a witness to William's signature. He got his pension which paid $3 a month for "partial inability to earn a support by manual labor". He asked for an increase to $6 a month on 4 Feb 1905 due to being "wholly unable to earn a support by manual labor". His disability was caused by rheumatism, disease of heart and catarrh In the 1900 US Federal Census for Oliver Springs, Crawford, Arkansas, 61-year-old Tennessee-born William and his 61-year-old Arkansas-born wife Winnie [McCaslin] Temple have been married 33-years. Winnie has born four children but only one, Francis Marion Temple, is living. William is farming land he owns free of mortgage. Both William and Winnie can read, write and speak English. Both William and Winnie can read, write and speak English. William's father was born in Georgia and his mother in Virginia; Winnie's parents were born in Indiana.
