In the 1850 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 53-year-old Tennessee-born farmer John and his 46-year-old Tennessee-born wife Charlotte [Whiteneck] Hemphill have in their household their children, 19-year-old Tennessee-born twins Joseph and James, 17-year-old Tennessee-born Elizabeth, 14-year-old Tennessee-born John, 12-year-old Tennessee-born Margaret, 8-year-old Tennessee-born Anderson, 6-year-old Tennessee-born Nelson, 3-year-old Indiana-born Samuel, and one-year-old Indiana-born Jefferson. Deduced from the birth places of their children, John and Charlotte moved to Indiana after 1844, but before 1847. Charlotte cannot read or write. John and Margaret have attended school within the past year.

Indiana State Board of Health-Certificate of Death 21925, Registered No. 59, reccords that Samuel Hemphill died at his residence (550 S. Dunn, Franklin, Johnson, Indiana) on 29 Jul 1924 at 11:45 a.m. of hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), contributory cause chronic nephritis. He was male, white, married, and a retired farmer. Samuel was 77 years, 9 months and 22 days old, born 7 Oct 1846 in Kentucky [sic] to John Hemphill and Charloot [sic] Whiteneck, both with unknown birthplaces. The informant was his wife, Stella Hemphill. Samuel was buried in 1st Mount Pleasant on 30 Jul 1924, undertaker A. V. Vandivier & son, Franklin, Indiana.
