Shared note

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Lovett, Jennings, Indiana, 58-year-old Indiana-born farmer Thomas J and his 45-year-old Indiana-born wife Savanah E [Walker] James have in their household their Indiana-born children, 19-year-old Elvie E, 15-year-old farm laborer William W and 8-year-old Estella B and a boarder 85-year-old Kentucky-born Catharine Walker, whose relationship to the family is unknown. William and Estella have attended school in the past year. Thomas' father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in North Carolina; Savanah's parents were born in Kentucky, and Catherine's parents were born in New Jersey and Virginia.

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Lovett, Jennings, Indiana, 78-year-old Indiana-born farmer Thomas J [Jefferson] and his wife 67-year Ohio-born old Laura V [Cole McCaslin] James have been married 15 years [sic]. This is a second marriage for both of them. Laura has born three children [at least two of them from her marriage to Harvey McCaslin], but only one is living. Thomas is farming land he owns, free of mortgage. Thomas and Laura can read, write and speak English. Thomas' father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in North Carolina; Laura's father was born in New York and her mother in Kentucky.

From Thomas Jefferson James' Find A Grave Memorial # 101969498 maintained by Thomas J. Nugent II. Thomas was born to Thomas H. and Sarah "Sally" (Harmon) James in Jennings County, Indiana in 1821. His mother, "Sally", was born to Mathias and Mary Magdelena (Fouts) Harmon on Feb. 23, 1788 in Randolph County, North Carolina. She died in Jennings County, on Feb. 9, 1872. His father, Thomas H. James was born to Thomas and Molly (Downey) James in Washington County, Pennsylvania in 1789. He died in Jennings County in 1859.

As a young man, Thomas J.'s left hand was involved in a thrasher machine accident, making amputation to the elbow necessary, but that did not stop him from continuing to farm.

He married Savannah Ellen Walker on May 25, 1845 in Jennings County.

Savannah and Thomas had thirteen children, many who did not live to an adult age.

  1. Sarah Catherine James, 1847 1868
  2. Samuel Thomas James, 1849 1904
  3. Emma Zetta James, 1850 1878
  4. Anne Dawson James, 1851 1854
  5. Demiah Azula James, 1852 1929
  6. Nancy Anne James, 1854 1877
  7. Baxter Butler James, 1856 1947

  11. Tiny James, 1867 1868
  12. Charles McCall James, 1869 1876

Thomas' wife pre-decreased him in 1881. At age 64 in 1885, Thomas was remarried to Laura V. McAslin [sic], who was born 1832. He died twenty years later at the age of 83 years, in Jennings county, in 1905.
