The family is living in a rented house at 82 North Jordan. Clarence's younger brother, 39-year-old Indiana-born Robert E and his 36-year-old Indiana-born dressmaker wife Sarah Ethel [Burgett] Hemphill are living next door in a rented house at 50 North Jordan. Robert is a vetrinarian. Everyone can read, write and speak English. Everyone's parents were born in Indiana.

In the 1930 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 50-year-old Indiana-born Elmer [sic Robert Elmer] and his 47-year-old Indiana-born wife Sadie [sic Sarah] [Burgett] Hemphill were married when he was 23- and she was 21-years old. Also in their household is 39-year-old Indiana-born William N Jones who is recorded as a lodger. This household is living at 203 West Madison Street in a house that Robert owns, worth $4,000. Robert is a veterinary surgeon, Sarah is a seamstress at a dry goods store and William is a horse trainer at a race track. All have worked on the last regularly scheduled work day. Robert served in the military in WWI, but William has no military experience. Everyone can read, write and speak English. Everyone's parents were born in Indiana.

Sarah Ethel Burgett Hemphill Nail's tombstone in Greenlawn Cemetery reads "Ethel Hemphill Nail, 1883-1977". She is buried next to her first husband, Robert Elmer Hemphill in Section CD, Row 5, Stone 2.
