In the 1870 US Federal Census for Township 2, Pawnee, Nebraska, 42-year-old Indiana-born blacksmith John McCaslin owns $3000 worth of real estate and $500 worth of personal property. He and his third wife 27-year-old Virginia-born M.G. [Mary G Morton] McCaslin have in their household their Nebraska-born children, 8-year-old Willie who is attending school, 4-year-old Jos. [Joseph] and 7-month old May. The census taker has recorded that her birth month is October, but her father stated that she was born in November in his pension application.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Table Rock, Pawnee, Nebraska, three Morton households are listed next to each other. The first is 63-year-old Virginia-born farmer Joseph B Morton who has in his household his 17-year-old Nebraska-born farmer son 17-year-old Charles., Charles has attended school in the past year. He is the son of Joseph's second marriage to Mrs. McNeil.

The second household is that of Joseph's daughter, 37-year-old Virginia-born Mary G [Morton] McCaslin, and her family of Nebraska-born children, 16-year-old Willie [William A], 14-year-old Joseph M, 10-year-old May L, 8-year-old Clara J and 5-year-old Gracie [Grace]. Mary's parents were born in Virginia; the children''s father was born in Illinois [sic] and their mother in Virginia; Jesse's father was born in Virginia and his mother in Maine [sic]

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Table Rock, Pawnee, Nebraska, 34-year-old Nebraska-born Joseph M McCaslin is farming rented land. He is head of a household that contains his Nebraska-born sisters, 28-year-old Jeanette C [Nettie] and 25-year-old Lizzie G [Grace L], who have no occupation listed. Everyone can read, write and speak English. Their father was born in Indiana and their mother in Virginia.

In the 1905 Kansas State Census for Burlingame, Osage, Kansas, 39-year-old J. M. [Joseph M] McCaslin is farming land he owns that has a mortgage. He has in his household his 30-year-old sister Grace McCaslin who is recorded as "housekeeper". Both Joseph and Grace were born in Pawnee County, Nebraska, and came to Kansas from Nebraska.

In the 1910 US Federal Census for Burlingame, Osage, Kansas, 44-year-old Nebraska-born Joseph M McCaslin is farming land he owns that has a mortgage. He is head of a household that contains his Nebraska-born sisters, 38-year-old Jennie [Jeanette C or Nettie] and 35-year-old Grace, who have no occupation listed. Everyone can read, write. Their father was born in Indiana and their mother in Virginia.

In the 1915 Kansas State Census for Burlingame, Osage, Kansas, 49-year-old J. M. [Joseph M] McCaslin is farming land he owns, free of mortagage.
