| Shared note | In the 1880 US Federal Census for Christal [Crystal], Montgomery, Arkansas, 53-year-old farmer, James McCaslin [transcribed as Mc Caslin] [transcribed as Mc Caslin] and his 41-year-old wife Mariah have in their household their children 18-year-old Mariah A, 16-year-old Charles B, 14-year-old Iona B, 12-year-old John D, 8-year-old Myrta , 6-year-old James W and 3-year-old Mariah M. Charles and John are farm laborers. Iona, John and Myrta have attended school in the past year. The move from Indiana to Arkansas took place after the1870 census but before 1872 when Myrta was born in Arkansas. The McCaslins are living next door to Mariahs brother 35-year-old Thomas Orrell, his 18-year-old pregnant wife Mary C and their 2-year-old daughter Doria A. In the 1900 US Federal Census for Bear, Montgomery, Arkansas, 74-year-old Indiana-born farmer James and his 61-year-old Indiana-born wife Maria [Mariah Orrell] McCastline [sic] have been married 49 years. Mariah has born 10 children [ I know of nine], but only seven are recorded as living. In their household are their youngest Arkansas-born children, 25-year-old farm laborer James, 18-year-old farm laborer Robert, and 15-year-old Arkansas-born Nettie. In the 1910 US Federal Census for Bear, Montgomery, Arkansas, 70-year-old Indiana-born widow Maria McCastlin [sic Mariah McCaslin] has borne nine children and eight are living. She is head of household and a farmer who owns her farm. In her household is her 30-year-old [sic] Arkansas-born farm laborer single son, James W. Both read, write and speak English. Mariah's parents were born in Maryland. James' parents were born in Indiana. Living next door are two more of Mariah's sons, Robert E and Charles B and their families. On 12 Sep 1918, when 43-year-old James William McCaslin registers for the WWI draft, he states that his permanent home address is Bear, Garland, Arkansas, that he was born 21 Jan 1875, and that he is a white, native-born citizen of the US. His present occupation is farming and he is self-employed. His nearest relative is his mother Mariah McCaslin of Bear, Garland, Arkansas. James' description is medium height, slender build with grey [sic] eyes and brown hair. He has no physical conditions which would disqualify him for the military. In the 1920 US Federal Census for Bear, Garland, Arkansas, 43-year-old Arkansas-born James W McCaslin is farming land he owns. Living with him is his mother, 79-year-old Indiana-born widow Maria [Orrell] Mccaslin. They are living on Albert Pike Highway. James' parents were born in Indiana; Maria's parents were born in Marland. On 2 Oct 1925 at the Garland County, Arkansas Courthouse, J W McCaslin applied for a $100 bond for Marriage License to marry Josie Propest. He signed as principal and H W McDowell signed as security. The Affidavit for the marriage license is blank. A Marriage License was then issued to 51-year-old J W McCaslin of Bear, Garland, Arkansas and 42-year old Josie Propest of Royal, Garland, Arkansas. They were married 4 Oct 1925 in Garland County, Arkansas by R A Dodd, Justice of the Peace. Trager Freeman, County and Probate Clerk, recorded their marriage on page 383 of Book 30 on 6 Oct 1925. In the 1930 US Federal Census for Valley, Garland, Arkansas, 55-year-old Arkansas-born James W and his 52-year-old Texas-born wife Alice J [Propest] McCaslin were married when he was 51- and she was 48-year-old. They are living in a rented house for which James pays $8 a month. He has no employment and he has not served in the military. James' parents were born in Indiana; Alice's parents were born in Missouri. |
