Shared note

From Andreas' Hisory of the State of Nebraska-Pawnee County: "HON. J. B. ERVIN, merchant, Pawnee City, was born in Saline County, Mo.; moved to Indiana in 1855, and came to Nebraska in 1869; was located at Brownville until 1871, when he came here and has been active in the industries of the locality since. In 1876, he was married to Miss Lillie McCasland, of Pawnee City, who was born in Indiana. They have a family of one son and a daughter -- Charles and Minnie. Mr. E. has been an active and efficient man in the business, social and political life of his locality. At present an incumbent of the Senatorial chair for the Eighteenth District of Nebraska."

In the 1850 US Federal Census for District 90, Saline, Missouri, 39-year-old Virginia-born farmer, Andrew B D Ervin owns $3,500 worth of real estate. He and his 29-year-old Virginia-born wife Eliza [sic] [Nickell] Ervin have in their household their children, 13-year-old Elizabeth S, 9-year-old William A., 5-year-old James S, 3-year-old Addison M and 11-month old Rebecca. Elizabeth was born in Virginia, but all the younger children were born in Missouri, making the family's move to Missouri occur between 1837 and 1841.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Pawnee City, Pawnee, Nebraska, 35-year-old Missouri-born merchant James Ervin and his 25-year-old Missouri-born [sic, Indiana] wife Lillie have in their household their children, 2-year-old Indiana-born Charles and 5-month old (December-born) Nebraska-born Minnie B. Also in their household is a boarder, 30-year-old Missouri-born Louie Entle(?) who is a clerk in the store. Both James' and Lillie's parents are reported as being born in Virginia. Charles' parents are reported as being born in Pennsylvania, and Minnie's father in Missouri and her mother in Indiana. [This doesn't make much sense, unless the children are adopted or the census taker is totally confused].

In the 1885 Nebraska State Census for Pawnee City, Pawnee, Nebraska, 40-year old Tennessee-born merchant James R Ervin and his 30-year-old Indiana-born wife, Lillie [McCasland] Ervin have in their household their Nebraska-born children, 7-year-old Charles, 5-year-old Minnie, 2-year-old Maud and 6-month-old Grace, and a servant, 20-year-old Swiss Rosa E Gonch. Charles has attended school in the past year. James' parents were born in W Virginia. Lillie's parents were born in Kentucky. The children's father was born in Tennessee and their mother in Indiana. Rosa's father was born in Switzerland and her mother in Indiana [sic].

James R Ervin died 1 Dec 1894 and was buried in the Pawnee City Cemetery, Plot Hazel Cem S1/2 - 31-3 (Find A Grave Memorial# 75723911).
