Shared note

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Vernon, Jennings, Indiana, 36-year-old Kentucky-born farmer Samuel and his 33-year-old Indiana-born wife Harriet [Shepherd] Austin have in their household their Indiana-born children, 13-year-old farm laborer William, 6-year-old Nora and 2-year-old Josephine. Harvey is missing from the family and may be presumed to have died. William and Nora have attended school in the past year. Samuel's father was born in Kentucky and his mother in South Carolina. Harriet's parents were born in Indiana.

Obituary on findagrave.com, transcribed by Ruth Phillips: The remains of Mrs. Josephine Smith who died of typhoid fever at Indianapolis were shipped here Monday for burial in the Dupont Cemetery. She was the daughter of Mrs. Harriet Austin formerly of this place. Josephine was the wife of Wilbur Smith.
