In the 1880 US Federal Census for Houston, Harris, Texas, 53-year-old Virginia-born lawyer J C [Joseph C] and his 32-year-old Virginia-born wife M C [Mildred Carrington] Hutcheson have in their household their Texas-born children, 12-year-old Elise, 10-year-old Mary, 7-year-old Stella, 5-year-old Mildred, 2-year-old Stirling, and 7-month old Joseph, and three black servants, 44-year-old Mary Haskin, 30-year-old Charles Burton and 22-year-old Adeline Mimms. Elise, Mary, Stella, and Mildred have attended school in the past year. Stella is listed as "maimed, crippled, bedridden or otherwise disabled". The family is living at 158 Travis. Both Joseph and M C's parents were born in Virginia.

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Houston, Harris, Texas, 53-year-old Virginia-born lawyer Joseph C Hutchisson [Hutcheson] and his 40-year-old Texas-born wife Bessie M [sic Harriet Elizabeth Palmer Milby] have been married for 13 years and have had two children, 12-year-old Texas-born Palmer and 9-year-old Rosalie W. This is a second marriage for Joseph and two children from his first marriage to M C Carrington, 20-year-old Texas-born Joseph C Jr and 18-year-old Allen C are living with them. Also in this household are three black servants, 53-year-old widow May Haskins, 20-year-old Annie Branch, and 21-year-old William Stelton. Joseph Jr, Allen and Palmer are attending school. Everyone but Rosalie is literate. The household is living at 1417 McKinney Ave in a house Joseph owns, free of mortgage.

Biographical note from "Guide to the Hutcheson and allied families papers, 1836-1997; bulk 1920-1949": "Joseph Chappell Hutcheson, Jr. Son of Mildred Carrington and Capt. J.C. Hutcheson, J.C. Hutcheson, Jr. was born in Houston on Oct. 19, 1879. He attended school at Bethel (VA) Military Academy, the University of Virginia, and graduated with a law degree from the University of Texas in 1900. He practiced law in Houston with his father from 1900 to 1918, became chief legal advisor to the City of Houston in 1913 and its mayor in 1917. President Wilson appointed him U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Texas in 1918 until 1931. He was federal appeals judge for the Fifth Circuit until 1948 when he became chief judge. In 1959 he stepped down and continued on the bench until 1964. President Truman named Hutcheson co-chairman of the Anglo-American Committee of Inquiry on Problems of Jews in Europe and Palestine in 1945. In 1905 he married Ann Elizabeth Weeden and they had two children, Mary Pye Hutcheson (Mrs. E.R. Seale) and Joseph Chappell Hutcheson, III. He died in Houston on Jan. 18, 1973."
