Shared note | McCaslin-Wykoff marriage dispute Azeline McCaslon [sic] was underage when she married James Wykoff Jr, and her father, George Shillideay McCaslin, brought action against the clerk of the Jennings County Court, John Walker, who issued the license. The document, transcribed below, records the settlement of that suite. August Term 1833 George McCaslon vz In debt John Walker Now at this day comes the parties by their Attornies and on motion this cause is dismissed at defendants cost, and by agreement the following release is put into an [sic] record To wit I George McCaslon of the County of Jennings and the State of Indiana for value by me recieved [sic]; do hereby release discharge and acquit John Walker Clerk of the Jennings Circuit Court from all liability me, or any person for my use for and an account of his having issued License as clerk of said Court to marry James Wykoff Junr to my daughter Anzeline McCaslon who was under the age of eighteen years & I do hereby release him from the action now pending for that cause and from all causes of action for the same. Given under my hand & seal this 28th day of August 1833 George McCaslon (seal) List Jer Sullivan _ _ _ _ _ _ Civil Order Book 1, 1822 - 1837, page 331 at the Jennings County, Indiana Courthouse. In the 1840 US Federal Census for Madison, Jefferson, Indiana, J W Wykoff has in his household one male under five (John), two males five through nine (Charles and unknown), one male 20 through 29 (himself), one female under five (Mary) and one female 20 though 29 (his wife Anzeline McCaslin Wykoff). There is one person employed in manufacture and trade, which would be James as he is a cooper. In the 1850 US Federal Census for Smyrna, Jefferson, Indiana, 36-years old Virginia-born cooper James Wycoff [Wykoff] owns no land of value. He and his 34-year-old Kentucky-born wife Anzeline [McCaslin] Wycoff [Wykoff] have in their household their children, 14-year-old Indiana-born Charles, 12-year-old Indiana-born John W, 9-year-old Indiana-born May E, 7-year-old Indiana-born Martha, 5-year-old Indiana-born James C, 4-year-old Indiana-born Thomas and 1-year-old Indiana-born Oliver N. Charles, John W and May E have attended school in the past year. James Wykoff (35-years old, $300 worth of land, cooper, born in Virginia) also got recorded in the 1850 US Federal Census for Jackson, Brown, Indiana as living in the household of Allen S Anderson, next door to that of Daniel Weddel. In the 1860 US Federal Census for Nodaway, Nodaway, Missouri, 44-year-old Virginia-born carpenter James Wykoff owns $800 worth of real estate and $150 worth of personal property. He and his 40-year-old [44] Kentucky-born housekeeper wife Eliza [Anzeline] have in their household their children, 20-year-old [17] Indiana-born Martha,19-year-old Indiana-born Andrew [missing from the 1850 census], 17-year-old [15] Indiana-born James, 15-year-old [14 ]Indiana-born William [Thomas], 13-year-old [11] Indiana-born John [Oliver N], 10-year-old Indiana-born Mary, 8-year-old Richard, 5-year-old Indiana-born Susan [Addie Belle?], 3-year-old Missouri-born Fanny [Flora or Anna Laura], and 1-year-old Missouri-born Elizabeth. The birth places of the children would indicate that James and Anzeline moved to Missouri between 1855 and 1857. James disappears from the 1870 US Census as he is not recorded in the 1870 US Federal Census for Nodaway, Page, Iowa, with his wife and children, 54-year-old Kentucky-born A M [Anzeline McCaslin] Wycoff [sic], 16-year-old A B [Addie Belle, Elizabeth on the 1860 Census], 14-year-old Flora, 13-year-old Annie, and 9-year-old Charlie. He has not been found anywhere else for that year.
