[William S] and his 46-year-old Iowa-born wife Alice [McKean] Mattley have been married for 20 years [this is incorrect as they married in 1876] and have had six children, four of whom are living. The living Missouri-born children are 15-year-old Leona, 10-year-old Ray, 8-year-old Mace, and 4-year-old Robb [Robert]. Leona, Ray and Mace have attended school nine months of the past year. Everyone in the family except Robert can read and write. William is a coal proprietor.
