In the 1880 US Federal Census for White River, Johnson, Indiana, 53-year-old North Carolina-born shoemaker John W and his 51-year-old North Carolina-born wife Elizabeth P [Ingram] Grimes have in their household their North Carolina-born children, 22-year-old farm laborer Columbus J C, 29-year-old widow M M [Martha Grimes] Church, 27-year-old divorce Elizabeth [Grimes] Stewart, 21-year-old Mary E and 16-year-old Sallie J, and their Indiana-born granddaughter, Carey I O Stewart. All nine are living. [This is incorrect, according to the 1910 census, Mattie is Johns second wife, they were married in 1890 and they have only one child. The other eight are children of Johns first wife, Mary Emmaline McCaslin who died in 1889] The children living with them were all born in Indiana. Marys children are 22-year-old Anna M, 19-year-old Chester, 16-year-old Lottie E, and 14-year-old William H. Matties child is 5-year-old James O. John and Marys 27-year-old daughter Lillian [McCarty] Park, her husband, 31-year-old Chas [Charles] O Park and their two children, 8-year-old Myrl and 7-year-old Estelle are living next door. Another daughter of John and Mary, 25-year-old Nellie Mae [McCarty] Park, her husband 27-year-old William B Park and their two surviving children, 3-year-old Larry D and new born Mary E, are living near by.

In the 1910 US Federal Census for White River, Johnson, Indiana, 64-year-old Indiana-born farmer John W McCarty has been married to his second wife 60-year-old South Carolina-born Mattie [Grimes Church] for 20 years and they have one child who is living with them, 15-year-old farm laborer James O. This is a first marriage for Mattie [sic]. John is doing general farming on a farm he owns free of mortgage.

On 6 Apr 1918, Martha M [Grimes] McCarty received a widow's pension of $25 a month, which was sent to Franklin, RR #1, Johnson, Indiana.

In the 1920 US Federal Census for White River, Johnson, Indiana, widowed North Carolina-born Martha [Grimes Church] McCarty is head of a household consisting of her son 25-year-old Indiana-born farmer James O, his wife 23-year-old Esther [Skaggs] and their daughter 2-year, 10-month old Vivian. James is doing general farming. The adults in the family can read and write.
