In the 1900 US Federal Census for White River, Johnson, Indiana, 54-year-old Indiana-born farmer John and his 50-year-old North Carolina-born wife Mattie M [Grimes Church] McCarty have been married for 32 years and have had nine children. All nine are living. [This is incorrect, according to the 1910 census, Mattie is Johns second wife, they were married in 1890 and they have only one child. The other eight are children of Johns first wife, Mary Emmaline McCaslin who died in 1889] The children living with them were all born in Indiana. Marys children are 22-year-old Anna M, 19-year-old Chester, 16-year-old Lottie E, and 14-year-old William H. Matties child is 5-year-old James O. John and Marys 27-year-old daughter Lillian [McCarty] Park, her husband, 31-year-old Chas [Charles] O Park and their two children, 8-year-old Myrl and 7-year-old Estelle are living next door. Another daughter of John and Mary, 25-year-old Nellie Mae [McCarty] Park, her husband 27-year-old William B Park and their two surviving children, 3-year-old Larry D and new born Mary E, are living near by.

In the 1910 US Federal Census for White River, Johnson, Indiana, 64-year-old Indiana-born farmer John W McCarty has been married to his second wife 60-year-old South Carolina-born Mattie [Grimes Church] for 20 years and they have one child who is living with them, 15-year-old farm laborer James O. This is a first marriage for Mattie. John is doing general farming on a farm he owns free of mortgage.

On 5 Jun 1917, when 22-year-old farmer James Oscar McCarty registers for the WWI Draft, he is living at R.R. 14 Whiteland, Johnson, Indiana. He was born 15 Jul 1894 in johnson County, Indiana, which makes him a "natural born citizen". His farm is near Bargersville. He is married with a wife and child as dependents. His description is medium height and slender build with light blue eyes and light brown hair. He has no physical disabilities which would prevent him from serving in the military.

In the 1920 US Federal Census for White River, Johnson, Indiana, widowed North Carolina-born Martha [Church] McCarty is head of a household consisting of her son 25-year-old Indiana-born farmer James O, his wife 23-year-old Esther [Skaggs] and their daughter 2-year, 10-month old Vivian. James is doing general farming. The adults in the family can read and write.

In the 1930 US Federal Census for Indianapollis, Marion, Indiana, 36-year-old Indiana-born James O and his 34-year-old Indiana-born wife Esther A [Skaggs] McCarty were married when he was 23- and she was 21-years old [abt 1916]. They have in their household their Indiana-born children, Vivian V, 10-year-old Eva M, 6-year-old Lillian V and 3-year-old Verlin V. The family is living in a rented house at 1633 Haddeus [?] Street for which James pays $14 a month rent. They do not own a radio. Vivian and Eva have attended school in the past year. James, Esther, Vivian and Eva can read, write and speak English. James is a mechanic at Fisher's Garage and has not worked on the last regularly schedule work day. He has not served in the military. Everyone's parents were born in Indiana.

When 48-year-old self-employed James Oscar McCarty registers for the WWII Draft on 27 Apr 1942, his residence is Monrovia R.R.#2, Gregg Township, Morgan, Indiana. His mailing address is the same. He doesn't have a phone. James was born on 15 Jul 1894 in Johnson County, Indiana. The name of the person who will always know his whereabouts is that of his daughter Vivian [McCarty} Sallee who lives at 1720 Lambert Street, Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana. His description is white, 5 feet 6-1/2 inches, 150 pounds, with a light complexion, blue eyes and brown hair. He has no identifying marks.
