Shared note

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Pawnee, Nebraska Territory, 36-year-old physician J. N. [Jeremiah N] McCasland owns $2,000 in real estate and $200 in person property. He and his 30-year-old wife Elizabeth [Woods] McCasland have in their household their children 11-year-old Louisa F, 9-year-old Rachel E, 4-year-old Lillybell and 2-year-old Laura L, 23-year-old hired hand William N Davis and Jeremiahs brother, 33 -year-old blacksmith J F C McCasland. Louisa, Rachel and Lillybell have attended school in the past year. All the children were born in Indiana, which means the family moved to Nebraska Territory after 1858. Their oldest child Mary is missing from the household and presumably has died before 1860.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Pawnee, Nebraska Territory, 48-year-old physician J. N. [Jeremiah N] McCasland owns $5,000 in real estate and $1,000 in person property. He and his 30-year-old wife E.A. [Elizabeth Ann Woods] McCasland have in their household their children, 21-year-old Louisa, 19-year-old Elzora [Rachel Elzora McCasland] Butter [Butler], 14-year-old Lilly, 9-year-old Minnie, 5-year-old Ettie, one-month old Herman, and their grandson, Elzoras child 3-yeat old Andrew Butter [Butler]. Minnie and the younger children were all born in Nebraska, while Lilly, Elzora, Louisa and their parents were all born in Indiana. Lillie, Minnie and Hattie have all attended school in the past year. Elzora must have married when she was 15 or 16 years old.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Pawnee City, Pawnee, Nebraska, 35-year-old Missouri-born merchant James Ervin and his 25-year-old Missouri-born [sic, Indiana] wife Lillie have in their household their children, 2-year-old Indiana-born Charles and 5-month old (December-born) Nebraska-born Minnie B. Also in their household is a boarder, 30-year-old Missouri-born Louie Entle(?) who is a clerk in the store. Both James' and Lillie's parents are reported as being born in Virginia. Charles' parents are reported as being born in Pennsylvania, and Minnie's father in Missouri and her mother in Indiana. [This doesn't make much sense, unless the children are adopted or the census taker is totally confused].

In the 1885 Nebraska State Census for Pawnee City, Pawnee, Nebraska, 40-year old Tennessee-born merchant James R Ervin and his 30-year-old Indiana-born wife, Lillie [McCasland] Ervin have in their household their Nebraska-born children, 7-year-old Charles, 5-year-old Minnie, 2-year-old Maud and 6-month-old Grace, and a servant, 20-year-old Swiss Rosa E Gonch. Charles has attended school in the past year. James' parents were born in W Virginia. Lillie's parents were born in Kentucky. The children's father was born in Tennessee and their mother in Indiana. Rosa's father was born in Switzerland and her mother in Indiana [sic].

In the 1900 US Federal Census for South Fork, Pawnee, Nebraska, 44-year-old Indiana-born widow Lillie [McCasland] Ervin has borne seven children and four are living [I can account for five of them]. The four Nebraska-born survivors are 22-year-old Charles, 17-year-old Maude, 15-year-old Grace, and 10-year-old Robert. All the children have attended school nine months of the past year. Lillie's occupation is listed as Landlord. She owns the family home clear of mortgage. Lillie's parents were born in Indiana, and the children's father was born in Missouri and their mother in Indiana.

In the 1910 US Federal Census for Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska, 54-year-old Indiana-born widow Lillie [McCasland] Ervin has borne seven children and four are living. Only two of them, 31-year-old Nebraska-born Charles W and 19-year-old Nebraska-born James R [Robert on the 1900 census] are living with her in a rented house at 922 South 11th Street. Lillie is living on "own income", and Charles is a doctor with a practice in medicine and surgery. James has attended school in the past year. Everyone is literate and speaks English. Lillie's parents were born in Indiana, and the children's father was born in Missouri and their mother in Indiana

In the 1920 US Federal Census for Lincoln, Lancaster, Nebraska, 64-year-old Indiana-born widow Lillie [McCasland] Ervin has only one child in her household, her oldest son 42-year-old Nebraska-born doctor Charles A. They are renting one unit of a fourplex at 730 South 11th Street. Lillie has no occupation listed and Charles is a retired physcian. Lillie's parents were born in Indiana, and George's father was born in Missouri and his mother in Indiana

Lillie Belle McCasland Ervin, born 3 Aug 1855, died 23 Nov 1926 and was buried in Pawnee City Cemetery, Plot Hazel Cem S1/2 - 31-3, Pawnee City, Pawnee, Nebraska (Find A Grave Memorial# 75724014).
