Mariah is illiterate. All the children, except baby Nancy, have attended school in the past year. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Hamblen, Brown, Indiana, 54-year-old Ohio-born farmer Soloman Hicks has $800 worth of real estate and $200 worth of personal property. He and his Kentucky-born 44-year-old wife Mariah [Mary Lane] have in their household their children, 21-year-old Mary E, 19-year-old July [Julie], 16-year-old Eliza, 10-year-old George, and 7-year-old Casanah. George is the only child in this family to attend school in the past year. Mariah can neither read nor write.
