Shared note | Chicago Tribune Obituary, January 28, 2001 Dr. Richard Reed Allen, 75, a pediatrician who served families in the western suburbs formore than 35 years, died Wednesday, Jan. 17, in Lacey, Wash. Dr. Allen founded LaGrange Pediatrics in the 1950s after serving as a doctor with the U.S. Air Force from 1951to 1953. Dr. Allen was a graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, wherehe earned both his bachelor's degree and his medical degree. As a pediatrician, Dr. Allen wason staff at both La Grange Memorial Hospital and Hinsdale Hospital. In 1977, he won aMedical Service Award from La Grange Memorial Hospital. Dr. Allen also was a volunteerfor Project Hope, based in Millwood, Va., and the American Refugee Committee inChicago, which provide medical support to war-torn countries. Dr. Allen spent six monthsworking in Thailand, where he provided medical assistance to Cambodian refugees in the1970s. After the invasion of Grenada in 1983, Dr. Allen also spent several months thereassisting needy children. He retired from his practice in 1988, and a few years later he movedto Washington. There he was a volunteer guide at Northwest Trek, a wildlife refuge, and alsotutored at local schools. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce; sons Doug, David andDan; daughters Deborah Ehrlichman, Diane Kramer and Dorian Patterson; and 15 grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at First CongregationalChurchof La Grange, 100 6th Ave., La Grange. |
