He and his 39-year-old Illinois-born wife Ursula [Bird] McKean have in their household their Iowa-born children, 11-year-old Wm [William], 9-year-old Luther, 7-year-old Allice [Alice] and the 2-year-old twins, Lyman and Edgar. Also in their household is Ursulas 20-year-old Illinois-born farmer brother, Edgar Bird. Wiliam, Luther and Alice have attended school in the past year.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Folker, Clark, Missouri, 46-year-old Missouri-born farmer Lyman McKean owns $2,000 worth of real estate and $1,200 worth of personal property. He and his 50-year-old wife Ursula [Bird] McKean have in their household their Iowa-born children, 21-year-old farm worker William, 19-year-old laborer Luther, 16-year-old Alice, the twins, 11-year-old farm workers Lyman and Edgar and 8-year-old Harlow B. William, Alice, Lyman Jr, Edgar and Harlow have all attended school in the past year but Luther has not.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Folker, Clark Missouri, 28-year-old farmer Walter S and his wife Alice V [McKean] Mattely have in their household Walters widowed father, 58-year-old Aaron Mattley and a hired man, Alices brother, 21-year-old Lymon McKeon [McKean]. Alices father was born in Missouri and her mother in Illinois. The Mattleys are recorded on the same page as Alices parents, Lyman and Ursula [Bird] McKean.

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Clinton, Henry Missouri, 48-year-old Indiana-born W.S. [William S] and his 46-year-old Iowa-born wife Alice [McKean] Mattley have been married for 20 years [this is incorrect as they married in 1876] and have had six children, four of whom are living. The living Missouri-born children are 15-year-old Leona, 10-year-old Ray, 8-year-old Mace, and 4-year-old Robb [Robert]. Leona, Ray and Mace have attended school nine months of the past year. Everyone in the family except Robert can read and write. William is a coal proprietor.

In the 1910 US Federal Census for Ford, Ford, Kansas, 58-year-old Indiana-born Walter S Mattley has retired and is living on his own income. He and his 56-year-old Iowa-born wife Alice [McKean} Mattley have been married 30 years [34] and have had five children but only four are living. [The 1900 census records six, but only four living]. The two youngest children are living with them, 18-year-old Missouri-born Mace D and 14-year-old Missouri-born Robert L. Both Mace and Robert are odd jobs men. Robert has attended school in the past year. Also living with the Mattleys is Alices divorced Illinois-born brother William J McKean who is also living on his own income. Everyone is literate. The family is renting part of a house on Main Street owned by Robert E Jones.

Walter is not present in this household and may be presumed to have died. Alice was born in Lee County, Iowa and all her children were born in Henry County, Missouri. The family moved to Kansas from Henry County, Missouri. Alice and Leona are recorded as housekeepers. Ray and Mace are recorded as dealers, which is written over their professions. Mace is a grocery buyer, but I cannot read what work Ray does.

In the 1920 US Federal Census for Sodville, Ford, Kansas, 66-year-old Iowa-born widow Alice [McKean] Mattley is head of a household that includes her 35-year-old Missouri-born daughter Leona and her 30-year-old Missouri-born son Ray D.
