Shared note

In the 1850 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, 72-year-old farmer John Matley has $700 worth of personal property. He and his 64-year-old wife Elizabeth have in their household their children, 30-year-old farmer John (property with $400), 28-year-old cooper Aaron (property worth $300) and 19-year-old Harriet Matley. The Matleys are living near Richard and Nancy [Sledd] McCaslin and their family as the census record is on adjacent pages. Aaron will marry Eliza Jane McCaslin in 1851. Aaron was recorded twice on the 1850 census, the second time as living with William J and Lucy [McCaslin] McClelland.

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Johnson, Scotland, Missouri, 36-year-old farmer Aaron Mattley has $1600 in real estate and $600 of personal property. He and his 41-year-old wife, Eliza J have in their family their children, 8-year-old Walter S, 5-year-old Jonathan and 3-year-old Nancy E. Walter and Jonathan have attended school in the past year. The family moved to Missouri between 1855 when Jonathan was born in Indiana and 1857 when Nancy was born in Missouri

In 1861 Captain Aaron K Mattley organized Mattley's Company D, Cavalry Regiment, Missouri Home Guard which had 89 men. He was discharged 6 Nov 1861 after approximately 5 months service due to a gun shot wound.

From Aaron Mattley's Civil War Pension Application, filed on 13 Dec 1869: "Aaron Mattley duly sworn on his oath says that while in the line of duty in the line of Battle at Athens Mo. Aug 5th 1861 he received a gun Shot wound in the right Side between the right Shoulder blade & the right hip pasing between the ribs and lodging some where near the left Side of the body nearly oposite of where it entered where it now remains causing pain Shortness of breath and rendering him entirely unable to procure his living by Manual labor."

He did receive his pension.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Johnson, Scotland, Missouri, 48-year-old New York-born farmer Aaron Matley has real estate worth $3,000 and personal property worth $1,000. He and his 53-year-old wife Eliza Jane [McCaslin] Mattley have in their household their children, 18-year-old W.S. [Walter] 15-year-old John, and 12-year-old Nancy. All three children have attended school in the past year. Aarons mother 84-year-old England-born Elizabeth [maiden name unknown] is recorded on the next page of the census, living with Aarons brother-in-law, 31-year-old Kentucky-born farmer Wm [William] Thomson, Aarons sister, 38-year-old New York-born Hattie [Mattley] Thomson and their three Missouri-born children, 10-year-old schoolboy Jno [John or Jonathan], 8-year-old E [Elizabeth], and 3-year-old Jenna. William has $2,000 worth or real estate and $1,000 worth of personal property.

Aaron seems to have been recorded twice in the 1880 census; once on 2 June 1880 in Folker, Clark, Missouri as a 58-year-old widower living with his 28-year-old son Walter S and Walters wife, 27-year-old Alice V [McKean] Mattley, and a second time on 18 June 1880 in Luray, Clark, Missouri as the second husband of Sarah E [Combs] Noe.
