In the 1860 US Federal Census for Centerville, Linn, Kentucky Territory, 44-year-old Virginia-born farmer John Jones owns $800 worth of real estate and $500 worth of personal property. He and his 31-year-old Ohio-born wife [sic] Margaret [Lusk] Jones have in their household their children, 18-year-old James, 15-year-old Margaret, 9-year-old Rebecca, 8-year-old Elizabeth and 8-month old John. All of the children were born in Indiana except John who was born in Kansas Territory. This would indicate that the family moved to Kansas Territory after 1852 but before 1860. Margaret, Rebecca and Elizabeth have attended school in the past year.

In the 1865 Kansas State Census for Centerville, Linn, Kansas, 35-year-old Virginia-born farmer Margaret [Lusk] Jones has in her household her children, 15-year-old Rebecca J, 12-year-old Mary E, 5-year-old John I, and 3-year-old Martha A. Rebecca and Mary were born in Indiana whereas Jon and Martha were born in Kansas. Also in this household is Missouri-born 22-year-old farm laborer James L Lusk who is probably her brother. He served in the Civil War in the 5th Regiment, Company D. Margaret owns $800 worth of real estate and $500 worth of personal property.
