Shared note

In the 1850 US Federal Census for District 45, Harrison, Indiana, 30-year-old David McCaslin is a wagon maker. He and his 21-year-old wife Elisabeth [Gray] have in their household David's son William, by his first wife (Mary Guthrie),and their children, 3-year-old John N, 2-year-old Mary, and 3 month old Anderson. David is recorded as being born in Kentucky, the rest of the family as being born in Indiana. David has also attended school in the past year.I believe that the census taker marked the wrong line and William is the one who attended school.

In the 1860 US Federal Census for District 2, Owen, Kentucky, William, John, Mary and Anderson are not in the McCaslin household. William is old enough to be off on his own, but the other three may be presumed to have died.

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Vernon, Jackson, Indiana, 17-year-old Will McCasland is living in the residense of F. C. Miller who is a miller. He is recorded as "running engine". He has attended school in the past year.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Vernon, Jackson, Indiana, 28-year-old Indiana-born laborer Wm [sic] McCaslin has no property of value. He and his 26-year-old Indiana-born wife Sarah Jane [Long] McCaslin have in their household their children, 6-year-old Indiana-born Anna, 4-year-old Kentucky-born Mary E, 2-year-old Kentucky-born Joseph, and 1-year-old Kentucky-born Jane. William's father, mother and siblings are living in the vicinity.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Gratz, Owen, Kentucky, 35-year-old [sic] Indiana-born farmer Wm [sic William] and his 33-year-old [sic] Kentucky-born [sic] wife Sarah [Long] McCastleman [sic McCasland] have in their household their Kentucky-born [sic] children, 18-year-old Annie [Anna], 14-year-old farm laborer Joseph, 12-year-old Jennie, 6-year-old Allie, and 3-year-old Dave [David]. William, Sarah and Anna are literate; Joseph and Jennie have attended school in the past year. William's parents were born in Indiana, Sarah's parents in Kentucky, and the children's father was born in Indiana and their mother in Kentucky [sic].

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Cleveland, Owen, Kentucky, 57-year-old Vermont-born [sic] farmer William and his 54-year-old Kentucky-born wife Sarah [Long] McCastleine [sic McCasland] have been married 40 years and have had ten children, only eight are living [I can account for only seven children]. The only child living with them is 15-year-old Kentucky-born Emma. William is farming rented land. Everyone can read, write and speak English. William's parents were born in Vermont [sic], Sarah's in Kentucky and Emma's in Kentucky [sic].

In the 1910 US Federal Census for Cleveland, Owen, Kentucky, 69-year-old Missouri-born [sic] house carpenter Billy [sic William] and his 66-year-old Sarrah [sic] [Long] McCasland have been married 50 years and have had eight children, five are living. One, their divorced daughter, 25-year-old Kentucky-born Emma McCasland McAnally is living with them. Emma has had three children and all are in this household, 8-year-old Kentucky-born William, 6-year-old Kentucky-born Scottie, and 7-month old Floyd McAnally. William and Scottie have attended school in the past year. Living next door to William and Sarah are their son-in-law Charles McAnally, daughter Jennie [Jane McCasland] McAnally and their family.

Seventy-four-year-, two-month-, 27-day-old William McCasland died 18 May 1916 at 7 p.m. of "general debility". He was attended by Dr J W Botha who had attended him from 5:30 p.m. 18 May 1916 until he died at 7 p.m. William was male, white and widowed; born 27 Jun 1841 in Indiana. His father was William McCasland [sic] of Indiana and his mother's name was unknown. The informant was his son-in-law's brother Price McNally. He was buried in the Carter Burying Ground [Carter Family Graveyard] on 20 May 1914, undertaker Walker & Beverly.
