| Shared note | In the 1900 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, 41-year-old George McCaslin and his 35-year-old wife Laura [Stout] have been married 17 years. Laura has borne five children, but only four are living, 16-year-old Gertrude, 13-year-old Frank, 10-year-old Mort, and 6-month old Myrtle. George is a farmer who rents the land he farms. The 22 Feb 1906 Plain Dealer page 1 reports that: "Gertrude McCaslin returned to Madison Monday morning where she had a position as trained nurse in Denny's Sanitarium." From The Republican, January 9, 1908, p 3: Hughes--McCaslin It just leaked out last week that Miss Gertrude McCaslin of this city and J. B. Hughes of Indian- apolis were married on Dec. 17th. They will reside in Indianapolis. in the 1910 US Federal Census for Lovett, Jennings, Indiana, 39-year-old [sic] Indiana-born farmer Jerome B and his 27-year-old wife Gertrude E [McCaslin] Hughes have been married for two years and have had no children. This is a second marriage for Jerome, but a first for Gertrude. Jerome owns the acreage he farms (general farm) free of mortgage. Jeromes father was born in Indiana and his mother in Kentucky. Gertrudes parents were both born in Indiana. In the 1920 US Federal Census for Lovett, Jennings, Indiana, 51-year-old Indiana-born farmer J.B. Hughs [Jerome Benjamin Hughes] and his 38-year-old Indiana-born wife Gertrude [McCaslin] have in their household their 8-year-old Indiana-born daughter Virginia Hughs [Hughes]. In the 1930 US Federal Census for Lovett, Jennings, Indiana 46-year-old widow Gertrude [McCaslin] Hughes is living with her 19-year-old Indiana-born daughter Virginia [Hughes] Short, and 23-year-old Indiana-born farmer son-in-law Paul Short in a house he rents. The family has a radio. In the 1940 US Federal Census for Lovett, Jennings, Indiana 52-year-old [sic] widow Gertrude [McCaslin] Hughes is living alone at 214 Washington Street in a rented house, for which she pays $15 a month. She was living in Lovett, Jennings, Indiana in 1935. She has completed eighth grade. Gertrude is employed as a practical nurse at the State Hospital and worked 48 hours the week of 24-30 March 1940. She has worked 16 weeks in the past year. Her salary is not entered. She has no other source of income other than salary or wages. In the 1960 Eustis, Florida City Directory, Gertrude E Hughes (widow of Jerome B) is living at 722 Irma in Tavares, Lake, Florida. Gertrude Hughes, born 29 Jan 1884, died 17 May 1982 in Lake County, Florida. Her last address of record was Tavares, Lake, Florida 32778. She had applied for her Social Security Number in Indiana in 1951-1952. |
