William J is living next door to 50-60 year old William McClelland who has quite a large family and who may be Wm J's father. In the 1850 US Federal Census for Montgomery, Jennings, Indiana 32-year-old Indiana-born farmer William McCleland [McClelland] owns real estate worth $1,000. The McClelland family was very difficult to find in the 1860 US Federal Census for Montgomery, Jennings, Indiana as the census taker had recorded their last name as McMilland. However, they are there as a family unit. Forty two-year-old North Carolina-born [this is incorrect as he was born in Indiana] William McClelland owns $3,000 worth of real estate and $500 worth of personal property. This was taxed at 1% as an excise tax in August of 1864 by the Federal Government. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Montgomery, Jennings, Indiana 52-year-old Indiana-born William J McClellan [McClelland] owns $4,000 worth of real estate and $1,000 worth of personal property. He and his 50-year-old Indiana-born wife Lucy [McCaslin] have in their household their Indiana-born children, Belle [Mary Belle], 16-year-old farm laborer William B, and 4-year-old Morton. William B has attended school in the past year. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Lovett, Jennings, Indiana, 62-year-old Indiana-born farmer, William J and his 60-year-old Indiana-born wife Lucy G [McCaslin] McLelland [McClelland] have in their household their son 13-year-old Indiana-born farm laborer Morton. Morton has attended school in the past year. Also living with them are their 25-year-old Indiana-born farmer son Baxter [William Baxter] and his 19-year-old Indiana-born wife Anna B [Mountz] and a boarder 33-year-old Indiana-born Margaret McClelland whose relationship to the McClelland family is unknown. Williams father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in Virginia. Lucys parents were born in Kentucky. Annas parents were born in Scotland. Margarets parents were born in Kentucky.
