Shared note

In the 1820 US Federal Census for Jefferson County, Indiana, Richard Mc Cartton [McCaslin] has in his household one male under ten [James G], one male twenty-six to forty-five [himself], three females under ten [Eliza Jane, Elizabeth Ann and Lucy Gaines], and one female aged sixteen to twenty-six [his wife Nancy Sledd McCaslin].

In the 1830 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, Richard McAslon [McCaslin] has in his household two males under five years of age [Richard Thomas Henry and John Finley C], two males of five and under 10 [George Seaton and William David], one male of 15 and under 20 [James G], and one male of thirty and under forty [himself], one female of five and under ten [Esther Shilladay], three females of ten and under fifteen [Eliza Jane, Elizabeth Ann and Lucy Gaines] and one female of thrity and under forty [his wife Nancy Sledd McCaslin].

In the 1840 US Federal Census for Jennings County, Indiana, Wm J McClelland has in his household one male who is 20 but under 30 [himself] and one female who is 15 and under 20 [his wife Lucy Gaines McCaslin McClelland]. William J is living next door to 50-60 year old William McClelland who has quite a large family and who may be Wm J's father.

In the 1850 US Federal Census for Montgomery, Jennings, Indiana 32-year-old Indiana-born farmer William McCleland [McClelland] owns real estate worth $1,000. He and his 30-year-old Indiana-born wife Lucy [McCaslin] McClelland have in their household their Indiana-born children, 10-year-old Nancy, 6-year-old John H, and 1-year-old Amazan, 16-year-old Pennsylvania-born Margaret A McClelland [relationship unknown], 16-year-old Indiana-born farmer James Newkirk, 20-year-old Indiana-born cooper John McClelland [relationship unknown] and 27-year-old New York-born cooper Aaron Mattey, who will marry Lucy's sister Eliza Jane in about six months.

The McClelland family was very difficult to find in the 1860 US Federal Census for Montgomery, Jennings, Indiana as the census taker had recorded their last name as McMilland. However, they are there as a family unit. Forty two-year-old North Carolina-born [this is incorrect as he was born in Indiana] William McClelland owns $3,000 worth of real estate and $500 worth of personal property. He and his 40-year-old Indiana-born wife Lucy [McCaslin] McClelland have in their household their Indiana-born children, 20-year-old Nancy, 16-year-old laborer John, 11-year-old Amagon, 8-year-old Mary and 6-year-old William. John, Amagon, Mary and William have all attended school in the past year.

On his death on 17 May 1863, Richard left a legacy of $70 apiece to his children, James, Elizabeth [Eliza Jane], George, Lucy, Esther F [sic], John, David [William David], Thomas [Richard Thomas Henry], Strawder [sic Harvey Strawther], Nancy, Maria [Mariah] and Elizabeth A. This was taxed at 1% as an excise tax in August of 1864 by the Federal Government.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Montgomery, Jennings, Indiana 52-year-old Indiana-born William J McClellan [McClelland] owns $4,000 worth of real estate and $1,000 worth of personal property. He and his 50-year-old Indiana-born wife Lucy [McCaslin] have in their household their Indiana-born children, Belle [Mary Belle], 16-year-old farm laborer William B, and 4-year-old Morton. William B has attended school in the past year.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Lovett, Jennings, Indiana, 62-year-old Indiana-born farmer, William J and his 60-year-old Indiana-born wife Lucy G [McCaslin] McLelland [McClelland] have in their household their son 13-year-old Indiana-born farm laborer Morton. Morton has attended school in the past year. Also living with them are their 25-year-old Indiana-born farmer son Baxter [William Baxter] and his 19-year-old Indiana-born wife Anna B [Mountz] and a boarder 33-year-old Indiana-born Margaret McClelland whose relationship to the McClelland family is unknown. Williams father was born in Pennsylvania and his mother in Virginia. Lucys parents were born in Kentucky. Annas parents were born in Scotland. Margarets parents were born in Kentucky.
