He and his 22-year-old wife Elizabeth J [Muster] McCaslin have in their household their sons, 2-year-old Howard and 1-year-old George, and Elizabeths brothers, 18-year-old John and 11-year-old James Muster. Harvey is living next door to his parents, Richard and Nancy [Sledd] McCaslin. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, 38-year-old farmer H. S. [Harvey Strawther] McCaslin and his 33-year-old wife Elisabeth [Elizabeth Muster] have in there household their children, 11-year-old George, 6-year-old Margaret and 2-year-old Lucy B. Howard is missing from this census and may be presumed to have died. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, 47-year-old Harvey S McCaslin and his 42-year-old wife Elisabeth [Elizabeth Muster] have only one son, 21-year-old George in their household. Margaret and Lucy are missing from this household and may be presumed to have died. George S. is being brought to court by a James H. Spencer who says that George has a two horse Tennessee Wagon of his and won't give it back. He wants $30.00 or his wagon back. A number of witnesses are listed to be called A.O. Stout, James Corya, John E. Wilkerson and John H. Rogers but this case ended up being dismissed because of deficency in bond on September 30, 1891. In the 1900 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, 41-year-old George McCaslin and his 35-year-old wife Laura [Stout] have been married 17 years. Laura has borne five children, but only four are living, 16-year-old Gertrude, 13-year-old Frank, 10-year-old Mort, and 6-month old Myrtle. George is a farmer who rents the land he farms. In the 1910 US Federal Census for North Vernon, Jennings, Indiana, 51-year teamster George S McCaslin and his 42-year-old wife Laura have been married 27 years. Laura has borne five children and four are still living but only two are living with them, 22-year-old odd job man Frank, and 10-year-old school girl Merle [recorded as Myrtle on the 1900 census]. Also in their household is a boarder, 35-year-old odd job man William Foga. In the 1920 US Federal Census for Center, Jennings, Indiana, 60-year-old policeman Geo S [George] and his 55-year-old wife Laura [Stout] McCaslin have in their family their 9-year-old schoolgirl daughter Elizabeth, their 30-year-old divorced son Mort and Morts 9-year-old schoolboy son George. Their daughter Merle [McCaslin] Amick and her husband Cecil are living next door. North Vernon Sun - Thursday, June 4, 1925 YOUNG MEN ARRESTED FOR SERIOUS OFFENCE Two of our youn men from this city with two girls were arrested Friday night about 10 o'clock by Chief of Police Smith and night patrolman McCaslin after word had been received here that the four were indulging in a petting party west of town, fired with a bottle of moonshine that resulted in residents of the neighborhood sending in a kick that was not bottled. We refrain from publishing the names as we understand this is their first offence, however the Mayor, when they were brought before him for a hearing Friday night, after a plea of guilty was entered by one of the youths, sentenced the one boy to a $200 fine and 90 days at the penal farm, the other to $100 fine and 30 days. If parents and guardians would appoint themselves as police or watchmen over their children, escapades similar to the one Friday night would be unheard of. Bun Instead, the parents indulge their every want and the outcome is either a trip to jail or something much worse. First its [sic] an automobile and then its [sic] a bottle of hootch. The mayor is to be commended for his quick work in handing out a sentence worthy of the offense and in the future similar occurances of this kind will not be dealt with lienienatly [sic] by the mayor. [Note that the girls weren't officially punished-lebj] In the 1930 US Federal Census for Center township, North Vernon, Jennings, Indiana, 71-year-old policeman George and his 65-year-old wife Laura {Stout] McCaslin are living in a house they rent for $20 a month on Railroad Avenue. They have two lodgers, 47-year-old Lew L Jones and 23-year-old Harold W Johnson, both of whom are laborers for the State Road Department. George and Laura have been married 47 years as George was 24 and Laura 18 when they married. North Vernon Sun, April 4, 1930 CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY If anyone was to tell us that Tiel McCaslin had reached his 71st birth- day, that is if anyone but Tiel had told us, we would be inclined to laugh and tell one ourself. But we have it straight from Tiel himself that on Tuesday he celebrate- ed his 71st birthday and never felt younger in his life. Incidently Tiel was served with a wonderful dinner to commemorate the occasion with his daughter, Mrs. Ger- trude Hughes, Mr. and Mrs. Mort McCaslin, Mr. and Mrs. Riddle, Mrs. Margaret Klines of Greenburg and John R McCaslin of Franklin all present to wish him many more hap- py birthdays. George died 2 Feb 1936 and is buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, North Vernon, Jennings, Indiana (Find A Grave Memorial# 34142045). |
