In the 1840 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, Richard McAslin [McCaslin] has in his household one male between 5 and 10 years [Harvey Strawther], two males between 10 and 15 years [John Finley C, Richard Thomas Henry], two males between 15 and 20 years [William David, George Seaton], one male between 40 to 50 years [himself], two females under 5 years [Minerva Catherine, Nancy Caroline], one females between 15 to 20 years [Esther Shilladay], two females between 20 to 30 [Eliza Jane, and Elizabeth Ann. Lucy Gaines has married William J McClelland in 1839] and one between 40 and 50 years [Nancy Sledd McCaslin].

In the 1850 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, 56-year-old farmer Richard McCasland [McCaslin] owns $5,400 worth of property. He and his 55-year-old wife Nancy [Sledd] have in their household their children, 33-year-old Eliza J, 28-year-old Esther, 25-year-old cooper David, 24-year-old cooper Richard, 20-year-old cooper John, 18-year-old farmer Harvey, 14-year-old Caroline, 13-year-old Minerva, and 10-year-old Marie, and 17-year-old cooper James Newkirk (relationship to the McCaslins is unknown). Harvey, Caroline, Minerva and Maria have all attended school in the past year. Eliza and Esther were born in Kentucky and David and the younger children were born in Indiana, which would indicate that the family moved to Indiana after 1822 but before 1825.

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, 27-year-old farmer Harvey McCaslin has $908 in personal property, but no land. He and his 22-year-old wife Elizabeth J [Muster] McCaslin have in their household their sons, 2-year-old Howard and 1-year-old George, and Elizabeths brothers, 18-year-old John and 11-year-old James Muster. Harvey is living next door to his parents, Richard and Nancy [Sledd] McCaslin.

In 1862, Lancaster Township, Jefferson, Indiana Militia Enrollment shows 32-year-old farmer H S [Harvey Strawther] McCaslin and his brother 37-year-old farmer Dav W [William David] McCaslin. They are among the healthy members of the militia. about half of the adult males are ailing with everthing from stiff hip, weak chest, to fits and chronic diarrhea.

On his death on 17 May 1863, Richard left a legacy of $70 apiece to his children, James, Elizabeth [Eliza Jane], George, Lucy, Esther F [sic], John, David [William David], Thomas [Richard Thomas Henry], Strawder [sic Harvey Strawther], Nancy, Maria [Mariah] and Elizabeth A. This was taxed at 1% as an excise tax in August of 1864 by the Federal Government.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, 38-year-old farmer H. S. [Harvey Strawther] McCaslin and his 33-year-old wife Elisabeth [Elizabeth Muster] have in their household their children, 11-year-old George, 6-year-old Margaret and 2-year-old Lucy B. Howard is missing from this census and may be presumed to have died. Harvey and his family are living near the households of his moher, Nancy [Sledd] McCaslin, and brothers, W. D. [William David] McCaslin and Thomas [Richard Thomas Henry] McCaslin.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, 47-year-old Harvey S McCaslin and his 42-year-old wife Elisabeth [Elizabeth Muster] have only one son, 21-year-old George in their household. However, their 17-year-old daughter Maggie [Margaret McCaslin] Cline, her 23-year-old farmer husband James B Cline and their 4-month old son Gavin R are living next door. Harvey is also living near the household of his sister-in-law Emily [Fish] McCaslin. There is another McCaslin family in the vicinity, consisting of Indiana-born 36-year-old farmer William F, his 31-year-old Indiana-born wife Margaret and their 11-year-old Indiana-born son Charley C. He is Emily and Harveys nephew as he is the son of Harveys brother James G McCaslin.

Harvey is being sued for cutting timber on land that was not his. It was in August of 1880, the land was in Montgomery Twp and belonged to a James A. Hall but the trees (oak) belonged to a James W. Thompson of the firm of Jones & Thompson, North Vernon. In looking at the case I found another constables name I have to add. He was arrested and brought before Justice of the Peace Ben. F. Byfield, but stated he could not get a fair hearing there and wanted a change of venue which was granted to the court of Justice of the Peace John Tobias also in Montgomery Twp. The change was approved.

In the 1887-1888 Jefferson County Gazetteer, H S McCaslin is listed as owning 215 acres in Dupont, Lancaster Township, Jefferson, Indiana.

Harvey Strawther McCaslin died 2 Aug 1894 and was buried in the Graham Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Lovett, Jennings, Indiana.
