Lucy Gaines has married William J McClelland in 1839] and one between 40 and 50 years [Nancy Sledd McCaslin]. In the 1850 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, 56-year-old farmer Richard McCasland [McCaslin] owns $5,400 worth of property. He and his 55-year-old wife Nancy [Sledd] have in their household their children, 33-year-old Eliza J, 28-year-old Esther, 25-year-old cooper David, 24-year-old cooper Richard, 20-year-old cooper John, 18-year-old farmer Harvey, 14-year-old Caroline, 13-year-old Minerva, and 10-year-old Marie, and 17-year-old cooper James Newkirk (relationship to the McCaslins is unknown). In the 1860 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, 35-year-old farmer, W.D. [William David] McCaslin, his wife 22-year-old Emily [Fish] McCaslin and their 5-month old daughter Florella are living with his parents, 66-year-old Richard McCaslin and 65-year-old wife Nancy [Sledd] McCaslin, and two of his sisters, 33-year-old Nancy (Caroline) and 19-year-old Mariah. In 1862, Lancaster Township, Jefferson, Indiana Militia Enrollment shows 32-year-old farmer H S [Harvey Strawther] McCaslin and his brother 37-year-old farmer Dav W [William David] McCaslin. They are among the healthy members of the militia, about half of the adult males are ailing with everthing from stiff hip, weak chest, to fits and chronic diarrhea. On his death on 17 May 1863, Richard left a legacy of $70 apiece to his children, James, Elizabeth [Eliza Jane], George, Lucy, Esther F [sic], John, David [William David], Thomas [Richard Thomas Henry], Strawder [sic Harvey Strawther], Nancy, Maria [Mariah] and Elizabeth A. This was taxed at 1% as an excise tax in August of 1864 by the Federal Government. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Lancaster, Jefferson, Indiana, 45-year-old farmer W. D. McCaslin has $7,300 worth of real estate and $1,385 worth of personal property. He and his 32-year-old wife Emily have in their household their three daughters, 10-year-old Florella, 7-year-old America and 3-year-old Josiahah[? Josie]. William and his family are living next door to the household of his mother, Nancy [Sledd] McCaslin and near that of his brother, H. S.
