Jennings Probate Court Vol 2 (1829-1836) Pages 54-55: November 1831. On application of Samuel Graham guardian by letters of guardianship from the County Court of Shelby County State of Kentucky duly authenticated for the sale of the real estate of Cynthia Shilliday and Mary Jane Shilliday his wards. Said lands situate in the County of Jennings State of Indiana, and the said Cynthia and Mary Jane being the lawful heirs of Caleb Shilliday late of Kentucky deceased and the said Cynthia and Mary Jane being each entitled the one undivided one third part of each of the following tracts of land owned and possessed by the said Caleb Shilliday in his life time to wit one being the South West Quarter of Section Number thirteen Town five Range Seven East, the other the North West quarter of Section twenty four Town five Range Seven of the Jeffersonville district of Lands. And it appearing to the Court that the interest of the said Cynthia and Mary Jane will be promoted by public sale of the said undivided one third part to them and each of them belonging in and to said lands and It is hereby considered ordered and decreed that Henry Cunard, James S Smith and Samuel S Graham be appointed commissioners in this behalf to view and appraise the one undivided third part of each of the said tracts to which the said Cynthia and Mary Jane are entitled, and that they make report ot the same at the next Term of this Court.

Jennings Probate Court Vol 2 (1829-1836) Pages 67-68: Thursday 5 January 1832. This day came Henry Cunard, Janes S Smith & Samuel Graham who were appointed Commissioners at the last November term of this Court to View and appraise the undivided one thirds of the southwest qurter of section thirteen Township five north of Range seven east and the north west quarter of section twenty four Township five north of Range seven east [?] that after being duly sworn they did proceed to view and appraise the same at one dollar and fifty cents per acre Amounting in the whole to the sum of three hundred and twenty dollars which report is accepted & ordered an fibe [?]

In the 1850 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 32-year-old Ohio-born John Ritchey [sic] is a saddler who owns $6,700 worth of real estate. He and his 28-year-old Kentucky-born wife Mary J [Shelledy] Ritchey [sic] have in their household their 5-year-old Indiana-born daughter Florence.

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas Territory, 42-year-old Ohio-born farmer John Ritchey [Ritchie] has real estate worth $5,000. He and his 39-year-old wife Kentucky-born Mary J [Shelledey] Ritchey [sic] have in their household their children, 9-year-old Indiana-born Dale [Hale], 4-year-old Kansas-born John and 1-year-old Kansas-born Elizabeth Ritchey [Ritchie] and their hired man, 24-year-old Ohio-born Lewis Switzer.

In the 1865 Kansas State Census for Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, 48-year-old Ohio-born John Ritchie's occupation is recorded as Colonel, 2nd Iowa Regiment. He and his 43-year-old Kentucky-born wife Mary J [Shelledy] Ritchie have in their household their sons, 14-year-old Indiana-born Hale and 9-year-old Kansas-born John. Hale and John have attended school in the past year.

Exerpts from the will of Elizabeth King, widow of George King: Box 5x Will and testament of Elizabeth King - dated July 22, 1868. Filed April 22, 1873, Isaac M Thompson, Clerk Item 1. To the children of deceased daughter Esther Goodhue five hundred dollars between them. Item 2.To my grand children - Calvin Doss, William M. Doss, Lockey Juan Fernando Doss, Children of my deceased daughter Cynthia Doss, five hundred dollars each. Item 3. I bequeath to my great grand child, William Demaree, son of Mary Demaree, a daughter of my deceased daughter, Cynthia Doss five hundred dollars. Item 4. To my daughter, Mary Ritchey, wife of John Ritchey of Kansas and to their two children five dollars each (Married Jan 16, 1838) Item 5. To grandson Jefferson T. Doss one thousand dollars and to my grand-daughter Jennie Doss three thousand dollars (to secure payment of this she made arrangement with John P. Banta for payment but she to receive interest as long as she lived.) A codicil of Oct.15, 1868 revoked items one and two and made two thousand dollars to be equally divided between grand-children Calvin Doss, William M. Doss, Lockey Juan Fernando Doss, Newell Goodhue, Florida(?) Goodhue, (Milt, Miller or Mills) Goodhue and Dwight Goodhue. Another codicil Oct 6, 1870 revokes codicil of Oct. 15, 1868 in so far as Jefferson T. Doss is mentioned he is to have but one hundred dollars, the nine hundred to be divided between the children of Mary Ritchey. Aug 4, 1871 another codicil canceled the codicil of Oct. 6, 1870 and restored Jefferson T Doss to favor. This will and proof is recorded in Book A-pages 416-417-418 in the records of Johnson Co. Ind. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, 52-year-old Ohio-born John Ritchie owns $50,000 worth of real estate and $5,000 worth of personal property. His wife, 49-year-old Kentucky-born housewife Mary J [Shelledy] Ritchie own $1,200 worth of real estate. They have in their household their sons, 19-year-old Indiana-born Hale and 14-year-old Kansas-born John, both of whom own $200 worth of personal property. Also in this household are 32-year-old New York-born Mary Williams and her 12-year-old New-York-born son, Richard whose relationship to the Ritchies is unknown. Hale and John have attended school in the past year, but Richard is not recorded as doing so.

In the 1875 Kansas State Census for Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, 57-year-old Ohio-born farmer J [John] Ritchie owns $2000 worth of real estate. He and his 54-year-old Kentucky-born housewife wife M J [Mary Jane Shelledy] Ritchie have in their household their Indiana-born [sic] farmer sons, 24-year-old H [Hale] and 18-year-old J [John], neither of whom have attended school in the past year. The family came to Kansas from Indiana.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, 63-year-old Ohio-born John Ritchie is a farmer whose parents were born in Pennsylvania. His 59-year-old Kentucky-born wife Mary Jane [Shelledey] Ritchie is incapacitated with a broken leg on the day of the census, 1 June 1880. Her parents were born in Virginia.
