In the 1820 US Federal Census for Jennings County, Indiana, George McCaslin has in his household three males under 10 (Joseph H, David and Lemuel), one female under 10 (Anzeline), and one female 26 to 45 (his wife Rachael Laws McCaslin)

In the 1830 US Federal Census for Montgomery, Jennings, Indiana, George McCaslin has in his household three males under 5 (George William, John aka J.F.C and an unknown), two males 5 to 10 (David and Jeremiah), two males 10 to 15 (Joseph and Lemuel), one male 40 to 50 (himself), one female under 5 (Almanda), one female 10 to 15 (Anzeline) and one female 30 to 40 (his wife Rachael Laws McCaslin).

In the 1850 US Federal Census for District 45, Harrison, Indiana, 30-year-old David McCaslin is a wagon maker. He and his 21-year-old wife Elisabeth [Gray] have in their household David's son by his first wife (Mary Guthrie),and their children, 3-year-old John N, 2-year-old Mary, and 3 month old Anderson. David is recorded as being born in Kentucky, the rest of the family as being born in Indiana. David has also attended school in the past year. I believe that the census taker marked the wrong line and William is the one who attended school.

In the 1860 US Federal Census for District 2, Owen, Kentucky, 40-year-old David McCaslin is a Methodist minister with $50 worth of personal property. He and his 31-year-old wife Elizabeth have in their household their two children, 7-year-old Joseph and 5-year-old Rachel. Joseph has attended school in the past year. All of the McCaslins were born in Indiana. William, John, Mary and Anderson are not in the McCaslin household. William is old enough to be off on his own, but the other three may be presumed to have died.

On 3 Dec 1864, 44-year-old David McCasland [McCaslin] joined for duty and enrolled as a private at Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana in Capt Swift's Company (Company C), 9th Regiment Indiana Cavalry for a period of three years. He was living in Milton, Jefferson, Indiana, Congressional District 3. Bounty paid was $60. He was sick with pneumonia and in the USA General Hospital, Ward 13, at Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana from 5-7 Jan 1864, returning to duty on 7 Jan 1864. David was appointed 3rd Sergeant on 10 Dec 1863 in Company C, 10th Regiment Indiana Cavalry. On 25 Aug 1864, David was promoted to 1st Sergeant. The Regimental Descriptive Book describes him as 44-years old, 5 feet 9-1/2 inches with a light complexion, grey eyes and hair, born in Jennings County, Indiana, occupation mechanic. David was mustered out 31 Aug 1865 at Vickburg, Mississippi. He was last paid to 28 Feb 1865, drawn since then $29.74. He owed the US for arms, equipment, etc $19, but was owed $120 bounty money. Carbine, bullet box, belt, navy pistol and sabre were retained to be paid for.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Vernon, Jackson, Indiana, 50-year-old Indiana-born David McCaslin is a carpenter with no real estate or personal property value listed. He and his 41-year-old Indiana-born wife, Elizabeth [Gray] McCaslin have in their household their three Indiana-born children, 17-year-old Joseph, 16-year-old Richard [who is listed as a female, this is an error, the child is Rachel], and 3-year-old Sarah, and 53-year-old Indiana-born Laborer Lam [Lemuel] McCaslin who is David's older brother.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Gaylord, Smith, Kansas, 60-year-old Indiana-born carpenter David and his 61-year-old [sic she's aged 20 years in the last ten] Indiana-born wife Elizabeth [Gray] McCasland have in their household their Indiana-born children, 27-year-old Indiana-born physician, Joseph M, and 13-year-old Sarah Etta, and Joseph's 19-year-old Illinois-born wife Mary [Griever]. Sarah has attended school in the past year. David's parents were born in Kentucky, Elizabeth's father was born in Kentucky and her mother in Tennessee, and Joseph, Sarah and Mary's parents were born in Indiana.

On 15 Nov 1882, David McCasland received a pension of $4 a month due to varicose veins caused by injury of his right leg when his horse fell on 22 Dec 1864 at Huntsville, Alabama. The original declaration was filed 21 Jun 1880. It alleged bursting of veins in his right leg.

After the death of his second wife, Elizabeth Gray McCasland on 9 Apr 1888, 70-year-old David McCasland married 19-year-old Jessie Jobes in Wallace County, Kansas on 15 Jun 1889. The marriage was performed by John M Euwell, Probate Judge at the Judge's home.
