He and his 54-year-old wife Rachel [Law] McCasland [McCaslin] have in their household their younger children, 19-year-old Hessy J, 17-year-old Richard, 16-year-old Henry, and 12-year-old Walter. In the 1860 US Federal Census for Vernon, Jackson, Indiana (Post Office Retreat), 27-year-old miller Rich [Richard] McCasland has real estate worth $1,600 and personal property worth $250. On 9 Aug 1862, Daniel H Lory, Clerk of Jackson Circuit Court at Brownstown, Jackson, Indiana, issued a marriage licence to Richard M McCasland and Sarah E Cox. They were married on 14 Aug 1862 by Thomas Hill, M of Gos. [Minister of the Gospel] who filed the return on 6 Sep 1862.

Richard M McCasland was 32-years old when he enrolled as a private in Company B, 137th Regiment, Indiana Infantry (100 days, 1864) on 3 May 1864 at North Vernon, Vernon Township, Jennings, Inidana. This regiment was organized at Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana, and mustered in May 26, 1864. It was ordered to Tennessee and assigned to duty as Railroad Guard in Tennessee and Alabama, Department of the Cumberland, until September 1864. The regiment was mustered out 21 Sep 1864 at Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana. Richard was owed $2.88 for his 100 days pay and owed the Army 10 cents for ordinance.

Richard while in line of duty at Tullahoma Tennessee on or about July 8th 1864 contracted a severe cold while lying in line of battle during a severe rain storm. And that said cold continued until it resulted in disease of lungs. This disease of the lungs, probably TB, was the cause of his death on 30 Dec 1867. His tombstone, in Grassy Cemetery, Vernon, Jackson, Indiana, records his service Co A 137th Inf Inf but not when he was born or died (Find A Grave Memorial# 99213705).
