Shared note

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, 39-year-old Allen F McCaslin and his 38-year-old wife Mary (Alexander) McCaslin have in their household 16-year-old James, 12-year-old Margaret E, 6-year-old Rebecca F, 5-year-old George S and 1-year-old Jessie. The baby girl born in 1860 is missing and can be presumed dead. All the children were born in Indiana except Jessie who was born in Kansas. This would indicate that the family moved to Kansas between 1866 and 1869.

In the 1875 Kansas State Census for Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, 45-year-old farmer A.F.[Allen F] McCaslin has $10,000 worth of real estate and $800 worth of personal property. He and his 44-year-old wife M.R. [Mary R Alexander] McCaslin have in their household their children, J.T. [James T], 17-year-old M.E [Margaret E], 12-year-old F [Rebecca Frances], 10-year-old G.L. [George Lincoln] and 6-year-old J.A. [Jessie].

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, 46-year-old [she should be 48] Mary (Alexander) McCaslin is "keeping house' for her family at 381 Monroe Street. She and her 46-year-old [he should be 48] husband, A F McCaslin [Allen F] have in their household 26-year-old James (cigar dealer with a cold the day the census taker arrived), 21-year-old Margret [Margaret E] whose profession is given as "printer", 16-year-old Fannie [Rebecca F], 15-year-old Lincoln [George L] who is listed as a paper carrier, and 11-year-old Jessie. Fannie, Lincoln and Jessie have all attended school in the past year. This census record was hard to find as McCaslin is transcribed as Mc Leason. In the 1900 US Federal Census for Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, 30-year-old widowed Jessie (McCaslin) O'Connor, her 9-year-old daughter Edna M O'Connor, 69-year-old widowed Mary R (Alexander) McCaslin and a boarder, 23-year-old James H. Sherman are living at 201 Huntoon Street.

In the 1905 Kansas State Census for Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, 73-year-old Mary R McCaslin has in her household her widowed 34-year-old daughter Jesse A [McCaslin] OConner, her granddaughters, 14-year-old Edna May OConner and 20-year-old Pearl Snyder and a 30-year-old boarder Daniel whose last name begins with a T. Jessie, Pearl and Daniel are working as clerks.

In the 1920 US Federal Census for Topeka, Shawnee, Kansus, 54-year-old John J Slavin is a clerk for a railway company. His 47-year-old wife Jessie [McCaslin OConner] Slavin is a collector for a newspaper. They live in a home they own free of mortgage at 314 12th Street. And they rent rooms to 42-year-old Horace Oxnard, 42-year-old Paul W Vanderhoff, 30-year-old H E Grissle and 21-year-old John L Ewell.

In the 1930 US Federal Census for Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas, 64-year-old head clerk John and his 59-year-old wife Jessie [McCaslin OConner] Slavin are living at 1218 Harrison in a house worth $10,000 that they own free of mortgage. Johns age at first marriage was 46 so it is probable that his first marriage was to Jessie. However, Jessies age at first marriage was 18 and this would be her marriage to OConner. The Salvins have a radio and are renting rooms to 24-year-old Joe Reid and 40-year-old Dick Aylward.

Lawrence Journal World, November 25, 1941 page 7 TONGANOXIE Mrs. Jessie A. Slavin of Topeka died last Thursday at her home in Topeka. She was an aunt of Mrs. Henry Geib, J.
