Shared note

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 45-year-old [sic] Indiana-born farmer Garrett L and his 33-year-old Indiana-born wife Alma [Mary Alma McCaslin] VanNuys have in their household their Indiana-born children, 9-year-old Walter L, 7-year-old James E, 5-year-old Alice, 2-year-old Ezra A and 6-month old Arthur D. Walter and James have attended school in the past year. Garret's and Mary Alma's parents were born in Kentucky. Living next door to Garret and his family are his father, 77-year-old Kentucky-born farmer widowed Samuel VanNuys and his siblings, 29-year-old Indiana-born farmer John L, 34-year-old Indiana-born Tinie [Christina] and 31-year-old Indiana-born Maggie A [Margaret]. Samuel's parents were born in New Jersey.

The Franklin Democrat, Friday, February 11, 1898, Volume XXXVIII Number 31, page 1 column 6 CIRCUIT COURT. Judge Buckingham convened the February term of the John- son circuit court bright and early Monday morning, and went to work with a will to make a good showing on the largest docket ever placed before the court. The fol- lowing cases have been disposed of: . . . P G Covert, guardian of Ezra and Mary Vannuys. Petition to sell land granted.

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 65-year-old Ohio-born dry goods merchant Richard V and his second wife, 45-year-old Mary [Mather] Ditmars have been married seven years and have had no children. In their household are Richard's daughter by his first marriage to Alice Barnett Ditmars, 15-year-old Indiana-born schoolgirl Lillian, Richard's great nephew 22-year-old Indiana-born student Ezra A VanNuys, Richard's sister, 68-year-old Ohio-born widow, Rebecca [Ditmars] Donnell (who has borne two children, both are living), and 38-year-old Ohio-born servant, Mary Chesslur [?]. The family is living in a house that Richard owns, free of mortgage. Everyone can read, write and speak English. Richard and Rebecca's parents were born in New Jersey, Mary's parents were born in Scotland, Lillian's father was born in Ohio and her mother in Indiana, and Ezra's parents were born in Indiana.

In the 1910 US Federal Census for Goshen, Elkhart, Indiana, 32-year-old Indiana-born clergyman Ezra A and his 31-year-old Indiana-born wife Gladys [Miller] VanNuys [transcribed Vanninge and Tammip] have been married four years and have one child, 3-year-old Indiana-born Hervey A. The family is living in a rented house at 312 Washington Street. Ezra and Gladys can read, write and speak English. Ezra has had no months without work in the past year. Ezra's and Gladys' parents were born in Indiana.

On 17 Sep 1918, when 41-year-old Ezra Allen VanNuys registers for the WWI draft, he states that he is living at 414 So 5th, Goshen, Elkhart, Indiana, that he was born 21 July 1877, and that he is white and native born. He is the minister of the First Presbyterian Church, 414 So 5th, Goshen, Elkhart, Indiana. His nearest relative is his wife, Gladys M VanNuys, who also lives at the 5th Street address. His description is tall, medium build with blue eyes and brown hair. He has no physical problems which would disqualify him.

In the 1920 US Federal Census for Chicago, Cook, Illinois, 42-year-old Indiana-born minister Ezra A and his 41-year-old Indiana-born wife Gladys [Miller] VanNuys have in their household their Indiana-born children, 13-year-old Hervey, 7-year-old Mary R, and 2-year-old Margaret D. Also living with them is a lodger 30-year-old Illinois-born stenographer Bessie B King. The household is living at 1364 58th Street. Hervey and Mary have attended school in the past year. Everyone, except baby Margaret, can read, write and speak English. The VanNuys' parents were all born in Indiana, Bessie's father was born in Canada and her mother in Illinois. It can be deduced from Margaret's birth place (Indiana) that the family moved to Illinois from Indiana after 1918.

In the 1930 US Federal Census for San Francisco, San Francisco, California, 53-year-old Indiana-born Presbyterian minister, Ezra A and his 51-year-old Indiana-born wife Gladys [Miller] VanNuys were married when he was 28-years old and she was 26-years old. They have in their family their children, 23-year-old Herbert A [sic Hervey], 18-year-old Mary R 13-year-old Margaret (all born in Indiana) and 8-year-old Illinois-born John S, and a 25-year-old Philipino servant David Raymundo. The household is living in a rented you at 3461 Washington Street, for which Ezra pays $90.00 a month rent. The family has a radio. Herbert, Mary, Margaret, John and David have all attended school in the past year. Everyone can read and write. Ezra's and Gladys' parents were born in Indiana. David's were born in the Philipines. The VanNuys family moved from Illinois to California after 1922 since John was born in Illinois in that year.

When Ezra Allen Vannuys died on 1 Dec 1947, he was living in San Francisco County, California. His mother's maiden name was listed as McCaslin.

Ezra is mentioned in Who Was Who in America, a companion biographical reference work to Who's Who in America. Volume 2, 1943-1950. Chicago: A.N. Marquis Co., 1963. (WhAm 2). I haven't obtained the citation yet.
