Ex-Hopewell Resident, Prominent Minister, Dies

Word has been received by friends in Hopewell of the death of Dr. Wal- ter Lowrie VanNuys, former Hope- well resident, at a nursing home in Portland, Ore., Thursday, April 8. Funeral services were held at a mortuary there, Saturday. Dr. VanNuys was the son of Gar- rett List VanNuys and Mary Alma McCaslin VanNuys and was born in the Hopewell community June 19, 1970. He had been a resident of Oregon for many years and several times was elected as a commissioner to the Presbyterian General Assem- bly and in 1905 was moderator of the Synod of Oregon. In June 1945, shortly before he became ill, Dr. VanNuys completed 50 years in the ministry. He began his ministry in Ridgefield, Wash. and had served six churches in Ore- gon. Last January the recreational hall of the new Presbyterian church at Parkdale, Ore., was named and dedicated in his honor. Survivors are the widow. Mrs. Alice Hull VanNuys, one daughter, Mrs. Helen Church, of Annapolis, Md.; two sons, Edward VanNuys, of Oakland, Calif.; and Howard Van- Nuys, of Portland, Ore.; one sister, Mrs. Roland Oliver, of Pendleton, Ore., and two grandchildren. Dr. VanNuys was the brother of the late Dr. Ezra Allen VanNuys.
