Shared note

In the 1850 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, Allen is a 31-year-old farmer with real estate worth $2,150. His household contains his 29-year-old wife, Margaret Ditmars McCaslin, their children, 7-year-old Elanson G, 3-year-old Mary A and 10 month old Sarah A, and his father, 82-year-old, David.

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, Allen is a 41-year-old farmer with real estate with $6,300 and personal property worth $700. In his household are his 40-year-old wife Margaret Ditmars McCaslin, and their children, 17-year-old Elanson G, 14-year-old Mary A, 8-year-old William O and 5-year-old Harriet D.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 31-year-old farmer Garrett L VanNuys has no land of value, but he owns $485-worth of personal property. He and his 22-year-old wife Mary A [McCaslin] VanNuys are living next door to his parents, 67-year-old Samuel and 66-year-old Anna [List] VanNuys and his siblings, 27-year-old John, 24-year-old Tina, 21-year-old Maggie A. Marys parents, 51-year-old Allen and 49-year-old Margaret [Ditmars] McCaslin and her sibings, 27-year-old Gilbert, 17-year-old Oran and 15-year-old Hattie are living close to Garret and Mary as the McCaslin farm is on the other side of that of Samuel VanNuys.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 45-year-old [sic] Indiana-born farmer Garrett L and his 33-year-old Indiana-born wife Alma [Mary Alma McCaslin] VanNuys have in their household their Indiana-born children, 9-year-old Walter L, 7-year-old James E, 5-year-old Alice, 2-year-old Ezra A and 6-month old Arthur D. Walter and James have attended school in the past year. Garret's and Mary Alma's parents were born in Kentucky. Living next door to Garret and his family are his father, 77-year-old Kentucky-born farmer widowed Samuel VanNuys and his siblings, 29-year-old Indiana-born farmer John L, 34-year-old Indiana-born Tinie [Christina] and 31-year-old Indiana-born Maggie A [Margaret]. Samuel's parents were born in New Jersey.

Judge Banta states that, of the children of Allen and Margaret (Ditmars) McCaslin, only William and Harriet were alive in 1888 when his "History of Johnson County Indiana, 1888" was published, so presumably Mary A died before that date (she died on 19 May 1883). Coaborative evidence is her mother's will filed on 6 Nov 1895 which wills property to the children of her desceased daughter, Mary A Van Nuys.
