Shared note | In the 1870 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 40-year-old Wesley W McCaslin and his 30-year-old wife Melissa A [Malissa Ann Winchester] have in their household their children, 6-year-old Abraham L, 4-year-old Mary L and 2-year-old William W, and 18-year-old John Simons, the hired man. In the 1880 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 50-year-old W.W . [Wesley White] McCaslin and his 43-year-old wife Malissa A [Winchester] have in their household their children,15-year-old Abraham L, 12-year-old William W and 4-year-old Julis C, and 19-year-old Lemuel W Tilson, Wesley's nephew and the hired man. Everyone's parents were born in Indiana, except Samuel whose father was born in Virginia and his mother in Indiana. In 1886 Lincoln is attending school in Holland, Michigan. "The Franklin Democrat", Friday, August 14, 1891, Volume XXXII Number 8, page 5 column 2 H. L. McCaslin [sic] left for Los Angeles, California, on Tuesday in the hopes of bettering his health. A. L. McCaslin's tombstone in Hurricane Cemetery gives his death date as 15 May 1892 but his death is listed as 15 Apr 1892 in the Johnson County Death Index, which is incorrect. The Franklin Democrat, Friday, May 20, 1892 A. L. McCASLIN Lincoln McCaslin, son of Wesley McCaslin, died at his fathers home Sunday Morning at 3 o'clock. For a long time he had suffered from consumption and to this disease was due his death. At the time of his death he was about 26 years of age and his death is one which seems unjust. Mr. McCaslin was at one time local editor of the Republican and a student in Franklin college and consequently he was well known. His social qualities made him very popular and his manly virtues respected by all. He had travelled extensively North and West but received no permanent benefit. Only a few weeks ago he returned from California very feeble and his death was certain. He was conscious until the last and his last moments proved his unquali- fied strength of character. The funeral occurred Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Hurricane Baptist church, Prof. D. H. Hall conducting the services. Quite a number from this city attended the services. |
