Note: Age on Census indicates 1812 or 1813 as his birth year, but Bertha Lowe's DAR record states Dec 1815. This is a mistaken attribution as it is the birthdate of the other George W Taft who never left Vermont and died much later than our George W.

Shared note

Luther Taft married Lydia Pettigrew on 7 May 1804 in , Weathersfield County, Vermont.

In the 1810 US Federal Census for Woodstock, Windsor, Vermont, Luther and his wife Lydia have two sons under 10 (Moses and Aaron). He is living next door to his father.

The 1820 US Federal Census for Woodstock, Windsoe, Vermont records the household of Luther Taft. It contains three white males under 10 (George Washington, William and Edwin), two white males from 10 thru 15 (Aaron and Moses), one white male 26 thru 44 (himself), one white female under 10 (Sarah), two white females 16 thru 25 (unknown), and one white female 26 thru 44 (his wife Lydia Pettigrew Taft). The number of persons engaged in agriculture is one (himself). There are six free white persons under 16 and two white persons 26 thru 44 [the two white females 16 thru 25 are not mentioned}, making a total of ten free white persons. Luther's brother Samuel Taft and his father Artemas Taft are enumerated on the same page.

In the 1830 US Federal census for Weathersfield,Windsor,Vermont, Martin Diggins has Lydia Pettigrew Taft Diggins's children in his household, as all his children are grown, and he and Lydia had no children. In his household are one male between 5 and 10 (Edwin R Taft), one male between 10 and 15, (William W Taft) one male between 15 and 20 (George W Taft) and one male between 60 and 70 (himself), one female between 10 and 15 (Sarah Ann Taft) and one female between 40 and 50 (his wife Lydia Taft Diggins)

In the 1840 US Federal Census for Weathersfield,Windsor,Vermont, all of Lydia's children have left Martin and Lydia [Pettigrew Taft] Diggins' household. as there is only one male listed between 60 and 70 [sic] himself and one female between 50 and 60, his wife Lydia.

In the 1850 US Federal Census for Cornish, Sullivan, New Hampshire, sisty-six-year-old, New hampshire-born Lydia P Diggins is recorded as a head ot a household living in dwelling 106. Another household, living in "dwelling 106", contains 60-year-old, Massachusetts-born farmer Luther Newton and 3-year-old, New Hampshire-born Ella Newton. I have no idea what the relationship is, but they simply maybe renting different parts of a house.

The 1870 US Federal Census for Cornish, Sullivan, New Hampshire records 55-year-old, New Hampshire-born Enoch F Chillis, his 55-year-old, Vermont-born wife, Sarah A [Taft Chase] Chellis, and his 86-year-old, Vermont-born mother-in-law Lydia P [Pettigrew Taft] Diggins. Enoch is a very well-to-do farmer with $5,000-worth of real estate and $5,000-worth of personal property.
