Indiana McCaslins

Mentioned in her great grandfather George King's will. Will Transcript Book 2 pp 282-6, dated 26 July 1864, recorded 7 July 1868

Cornelius and Jane (King McCaslin) Hutton seem to have a blended family in the 1850 US Federal Census for Franklin Township, Johnson, Indiana. In their household are Esther McCaslin (recorded as Easther by the census taker) who is Janes 19-year-old daughter, Amanda Hutton who is Cornelius Huttons daughter by his first wife (Alli Wren) and their daughters, 13-year-old Sarah and 8-year-old Eleanor K Hutton. Also in the household is William W. St. John whose relationship to the family is not known.

On 31 October 1851, Jane [King McCaslin] and Cornelius Hutton, with her children, George F and Esther McCaslin, Cornelius children by his first wife Alli Wren and their children, Sarah and Esther Hutton, were dismissed by letter from The First Presbyterian Church of Franklin. They moved to Jasper County, Indiana.

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Jordan, Jasper, Indiana, 68-year-old farmer Cornelius (recorded as Conelius by the census taker) is living with his 17-year-old daughter, Eleanor.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Jordan, Jasper, Indiana, 33-year-old farmer Stearns Iliff has $1,190 in personal property but no real estate. He and his 27-year-old wife Eleanor Hutton Iliff have in their household their children, William C (age 8), John W (age 5), Harriet (age 2) and George (the baby who is 6 months old), and Eleanors 77-year-old father Cornelius Hutton. Corneluis has $4,500 in real estate, It looks as if Stearns is farming his father-in-laws land.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Jordan, Jasper, Indiana, 43-year-old Indiana-born farmer Stearns Iliff and his 37-year-old Indiana-born wife Eleanor [Hutton] Iliff have in their household their Indiana-born children, 18-year-old farm laborer William, 15-year-old farm laborer John W, 12-year-old Harriet, 10-year-old George and 4-year-old Charles. John, Harriet and George have attended school in the past year. Both Stearns and Eleanor are literate. Stearns' father was born in New Jersey and his mother in Pennsylvania. Eleanor's parents were born in Kentucky.

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Jordan, Jasper, Indiana, 63-year-old farmer Stearns and his 57-year-old wife Eleanor [Hutton] Iliff for 39-years and have had seven children, six of whom are living. [I can account for only six children] In their household are their daughters, 32-year-old Harriet A and 19-year-old Grace, and 27-year-old farm laborer George M Bessie. Stearns owns his farmstead free of mortgage, but he appears to be renting land to his son 35-year-old John W, who is living next door with his family. Stearns son 30-year-old George and Georges family are living next door also. (Order is George, Stearns, John, from top to bottom on the census page)

In the 1910 US Federal Census for Jordan, Jasper, Indiana, 73-year-old Stir [Stearns] and his 67-year-old wife Elnor K [Eleanor K Hutton] Iliff have been married 49 years and have had seven children but only six are living [I can only account for six]. In their household is their unmarried daughter, 42-year-old Hattie [Harriet] who is probably caring for her elderly parents. The family lives on a farm, which Stearns owns free of mortgage, but he is not listed as a farmer. I think what the census taker has written is home chores. Everyone can read and write. Stearns served in the Civil War and may be blind as there is a 2 in that column. Stearns father was born in New Jersey and his mother in Pennsylvania. Eleanors parents were both born in Kentucky.

In the 1920 US Federal Census for Rensselaer, Marion, Jasper, Indiana, 77-year-old Indiana-born widow, Eleanor A Iliff is living with her 52-year-old indiana-born single daughter Harriett A in a rented house at 217 West Anglica. Harriett is a seamstress. Both Eleanor and Harriett can read and write.

Edna was buried in Weston Cemetery, Jasper County, Indiana on 5 January 1924 in a plot owned by Eleanor K Iliff (Sec N Lot 12 Sp 2, recorded in Book 4 page 74)
