Shared note

In the 1850 US Federal Census for Franklin Township, Johnson County, Indiana, Robert Jeffery, a 56-year-old tanner with $5,000 of property, born in Pennsylvania, has in his household his wife, Sarah [Price Carson] Jeffery (age 38, born in Kentucky) and his children, John (age 16, laborer), Mary Ursula (age 14), and 12-year-old twins, Thomas and Robert Jeffery. All of these children were born in Pennsylvania. In his household are also two children who are his step-children, Mary Jane Carson (age 16, born in Kentucky) and James Carson (age 3, born in Indiana). This is a blended family with the Jeffery children being Roberts and the Carson children being Sarahs by an earlier marriage. The facts that confirm this statement are the birthplaces of the children. All the Jefferys were born in Pennsylvania, where Robert originated, while the Carson children were born in Kentucky and Indiana, where Sarah is known to have been. Also the 1860 has James Carson living with Sarah, therefore presumably his mother, after her marriage to Hervey McCaslin.

Ephraim Jeffery married Mary Jane Carson (his step-sister) 11 Nov 1851 in Johnson County, Indiana.

The 1870 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana records 42-year-old, Pennsylvania-born Ephraim Jeffery hia 36-year-old, Kentucky-born wife May J [sic] [Carson] Jeffery, their Indiana-born sons, 17-year-old Julian F and 15-year-old Walter C, and 16-year-old, Indiana-born Naomi Hamilton, whose relationship to the family I do not know. Ephrain is a Druggist who owns $2,500 worth of real estate and $5,000 worth of personal property. Mary is keeping house and the three children are "at home" and have attended school in the past year.

Franklin Jeffersonian, September 22, 1883, page 3 column 3 LOCAL BREVITIES Mrs. Ephriam Jeffery, of this city, gave her brother Mr. Hervey McCaslin a party, at her residence on last Mon- day evening in honor of Mr. Mc- Caslin's 30th birth day. Among those present was Jno. Fletcher and wife, S. A. Wilson and wife and Jno. Car- son and wife. The evening was spent very pleasant indeed by all present.

The Johnson County Indiana WPA Death Index, 1882-1920, page 104, referencing Book H-15, page 22, records that Mary J. Jeffery, a fifty-four-year-old white female, died 28 Nov 1888 in Franklin.
