Shared note

Sarah was a much married lady. Her maiden name was Price. She first married D Adam Carson in 1831 in Kentucky: children, Mary Jane and James Carson. After he died in 1848, she married Robert Jeffery in 1849, forming a blended family of his children and her children. Robert died after one year of marriage. She then married Hervey McCaslin, Sr in 1851 and they had one son, Hervey Jr.

Adam Carson married Sarah Price on 3 Nov 1831 in Gallatin County, Kentucky.

D Adam Carson died 23 Feb 1848 in Franklin, Johnson, Indiana and was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery (Find A Grave Memorial# 152476458).

Robert Jeffrey's first wife Harriett (maiden name unknown) died before 31 Jul 1849 as that is the date that Robert married Sarah (Price) Carson in Johnson County, Indiana.

In the 1850 US Federal Census for Franklin Township, Johnson County, Indiana, Robert Jeffery, a 56-year-old tanner with $5,000 of property, born in Pennsylvania, has in his household his second wife, Sarah [Price Carson] Jeffery (age 38, born in Kentucky) and his children, John (age 16, laborer), Mary Ursula (age 14), and 12-year-old twins, Thomas and Robert Jeffery. All of these children were born in Pennsylvania. In his household are also two children who are his step-children, Mary Jane Carson (age 16, born in Kentucky) and James Carson (age 3, born in Indiana). This is a blended family with the Jeffery children being Roberts and the Carson children being Sarahs by an earlier marriage. The facts that confirm this statement are the birthplaces of the children. All the Jefferys were born in Pennsylvania, where Robert originated, while the Carson children were born in Kentucky and Indiana, where Sarah is known to have been. Also the 1860 has James Carson living with Sarah, therefore presumably his mother, after her marriage to Hervey McCaslin.

Robert Jeffery died 9 Oct 1850 in Johnson County, Indiana and was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Franklin, Johnson, Indiana (Find A Grave Memorial# 32027466).

Hervey George McCaslin married Sarah (Price) Carson Jeffery on 31 Dec 1851 in Johnson County, Indiana.

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Franklin Township, Johnson County, Hervey McCaslin (recorded as Harvey by the census taker) is a prosperous 57-year-old farmer with real estate worth $7,000 and personal property worth $3,200. In his household are his second wife, Sarah P[rice Carson Jeffery] McCaslin (age 47), his sons by his first wife Mildred, Joseph B (age 21) and George (age 18), his son by Sarah, Hervey (age 7), Sarahs son, James Carson (age 12) and Ellen Jackson, a 16-year-old domestic. Joseph and George are listed as farmers who each have $3,000 worth of real estate and $500 worth of personal property.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Franklin Ward 1, Johnson County Indiana, Hervey (mistranscribed as Harrey) is a very prosperous retired farmer, with real estate worth $18,000 and personal property worth $3,100. In his household are his wife, Sarah P[rice] (age 58, keeping house), their 16-year-old son, Hervey (spelled correctly by everyone) and 18-year-old Susan Stumet, their domestic servant.

Hervey George McCaslin Sr died 12 Sep 1870 in Frankin, Johnson, Indiana and was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, Franklin, Johnson, Indiana (Find A Grave Memorial# 9526295).

Sarah Price Carson Jeffery McCaslin died on Tuesday, 2 Jan 1872, even though her tombstone gives her death date as 1873. She couldn't have died in 1873 as Tuesday, 2 January only occurs in 1872. The paper with her obit is also dated 1872.

Here is her obituary: McCASLIN, Sarah (Price Carson Jeffery) Date of Death: Tuesday, 2 Jan 1872 Source: The Watchman, 30 Jan 1872, Obituary Files, Johnson County Museum of History, Genealogy Room, Franklin, Johnson, Indiana

Mrs. S. P. McCaslin, wife of the late Harvey [sic Hervey] aged fifty seven years, was stricken with apoplexy on Monday morning week at 10 o'clock, and after 2 o'clock on that day, was unconscious until Tuesday morning at 7 o'clock, when death came and took her over the river. -Democratic Herald Submitted by Lois Johnson
