Shared note | In the 1830 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, George has in his household one male 10-15 years old (his son John Calvin) one male 40-50 years old (himself), one female 10-15 years old (Mary Covert), one female 15-20 years old (Cynthia Ann) and one female between 50-60 (his wife, Eleanor) James Shaffer married Cynthia Ann King on 8 Nov 1832 in Johnson County, Indiana. He died before 21 Nov 1839 as Cynthia [King] Shaffer married William McCaslin on that date. William McCaslin is living near his father, David Wasson, in the 1840 US Federal Census for Township not stated, Johnson County, Indiana. In his household are one male between 20 and 30 (himself) and one female between 20 and 30 (his second wife, Cynthia Ann King Shaffer). One person (himself) is employed in agriculture. The Census taker has recorded his name as McAslin as he has done for all the McCaslins this year.. In the 1850 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson County,Indiana, William McCaslin is a 33-year-old farmer, born in Kentucky. In his household are his wife, Cynthia (age 35, and born in Kentucky) his sons Valerias B (age 9, born in Indiana) and Byron K (age 1, born in Indiana). An apparently unrelated 14-year-old boy, Hiram St John, is also living with them. Valerias and Hiram have attended school in the past year. Cynthia King and William McCaslins fathers are half-brothers. In the 1860 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 43-year-old Kentucky-born farmer William McCaslin [transcribed William M Caslin] owns $16,800 worth of real estate and $1,200 worth of personal property. He and his 45-year-old wife Cyntha [sic] have in their household their son, 19-year-old Brainard who has attended school in the past year. The presence of Brainard in this household when the census was taken on 13 June 1860 is puzzling as Banta's History of Johnson County states that he died on 6 June 1860. I believe the census taker was recording everyone who was living on 1 June 1860. In the 1870 US Federal Census for Franklin 3rd Ward, Johnson County, Indiana, William is a very prosperous 53-year-old farmer with real estate worth $43,200 and personal property worth $12,5000. In his household are his wife, Cynthia A (age 55) and an apparently unrelated young woman, May C Fitzpatrick, age 19 and born in Indiana. She has attended school in the past year. Cyntha was 63 years and 4 months old when she died on 2 Mar 1878, according to her tombstone inscription in Greenlawn Cemetery, Franklin, Johnson, Indiana. The date on her tombstone is a day later than that recorded in "The Family Bible Records of Johnson County". Her name is carved as Cyntha on her headstone, but Cynthia on her footstone.
