Shared note | The 1840 US Federal Census for Township not stated, Johnson County, Indiana, shows that James McCaslin has moved to join his brothers, David and Alexander. His brother, Richard is still living in Scott County. In James household are one male under 5 (John C), one male between 5 and 10 (James W), one male between 40 and 50 (himself), one female under 5 (Louisa should be in the next category - the census taker has crossed out 2 in that category and added one to this), one female between 5 and 10 (Elizabeth), one female between 10 and 15 (Mary Ann), one female between 15 and 20 (Margaret) and one female between 30 and 40 (his wife, Elizabeth Carr McCaslin). One person (James) is employed in agriculture. The 1850 Federal Census for Franklin Township, Johnson County, Indiana, lists the names of James and Elizabeths children and a granddaughter who are living in their household. They are Margaret McCaslin Stewart (age 24), Mary Ann (age 22), Elizabeth (age 19), Louisa (age 18), James W (age 16), John C (age 11), Lucy E (age 10), David (age 8) and Florence C Stewart (Margarets daughter, age 8 months). Although James W is listed as a farmer at age 16, he has been attending school along with his brothers, John and David, and sister, Lucy. James farm is near his brother Alexanders farm as their information is recorded on the same census page. James has property worth $2,000. In the 1860 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, James McCaslin is a 60-year-old farmer with $6,400 in real estate and $1,000 in personal property. James W and John Cs ages are not what would be expected from the 1850 census. Margaret, her daughter Florence, Mary Ann, Elizabeth and Louisa are no longer in James Srs household. John C McCaslin enlisted in Company I 18th Regiment Indiana Infantry as a Corporal on 29 July 1861. He took sick at Otterville in 1 October 1861 (measles with complications resulting in lung disease), remained on the absent-sick rolls through April 1862 and was discharged at St Louis on 9 May 1862. The following McCaslins are listed in the US Civil War Draft Registration Records for the Sixth Congressional District in Indiana, Johnson County, Vol 2. They are living in the first half of Franklin Township. Another given when she was 39-years old (abt 1881), states that her occupation is as a milliner, that she has known John McCaslin for about 20 years, from 1862 to 1868, she lived within 2-1/2 miles of him in Indiana. She also states that in the fall of 1868 both families moved to Kansas. and from that time to fall 1870, she lived within a 1/8 of a mile of John McCaslin.
