His brother, Richard is still living in Scott County. In James household are one male under 5 (John C), one male between 5 and 10 (James W), one male between 40 and 50 (himself), one female under 5 (Louisa should be in the next category - the census taker has crossed out 2 in that category and added one to this), one female between 5 and 10 (Elizabeth), one female between 10 and 15 (Mary Ann), one female between 15 and 20 (Margaret) and one female between 30 and 40 (his wife, Elizabeth Carr McCaslin). One person (James) is employed in agriculture.

The 1850 Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, lists the names of James and Elizabeths children and a granddaughter who are living in their household. They are Margaret McCaslin Stewart (age 24), Mary Ann (age 22), Elizabeth (age 19), Louisa (age 18), James W (age 16), John C (age 11), Lucy E (age 10), David (age 8) and Florence C Stewart (Margarets daughter, age 8 months). Although James W is listed as a farmer at age 16, he has been attending school along with his brothers, John and David, and sister, Lucy. James farm is near his brother Alexanders farm as their information is recorded on the same census page. James has property worth $2,000.

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 59-year-old New Jersey-born master cooper Samuel C Crowell owns $800 of real estate and $800 of personal property. He and his 52-year-old New Jersey-born wife Jane B [maiden name unknown] have in their household their 30-year-old New Jersey-born cooper son William C, William's wife 26-year-old Louisa J [McCaslin], and their 15-year-old New Jersey-born son David M, who has attended school in the past year. William owns $800 of personal property.

In the 1870 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 40-year-old Indiana-born Elizabeth [McCaslin] Carr is keeping house for two of her Indiana-born children, 7-year-old Maggie [Margaret Ann] and 3-year-old Mary [Mary Jane] Carr. Elizabeth's 4-year-old daughter Hattie [Harriet] Carr is living with her aunt Mary McCaslin Morgan. Living next door to Elizabeth is another of her sisters, Louisa J McCaslin Crowell, Louisa's husband 40-year-old New Jersey-born William B Crowell and their Indiana-born children, 5-year-old Alice J [sic] and 3-year-old Effie J. William is a cooper with $4,500 worth of real estate and $600 worth of personal property.

In this 1880 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 50-year-old New Jersey-born grain dealer Wm C [sic] and his 48-year-old Indiana-born wife Louisa [McCaslin] Crewell [sic] have in their household their three Indiana-born children, 15-year-old Alice, 12-year-old Effie and 9-year-old Wilber. All of the children have attended school in the past year. William's parents were born in New Jersey; Louisa's parents were born in Kentucky; the children's father was born in New Jersey and their mother in Indiana.

In 1890, Louisa [McCaslin] Crowell is recorded in the Johnson County, Indiana Directory as living at Lot 4, Traub's addition in Franklin, Johnson, Indiana.

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 67-year-old Indiana-born widow Louisa [McCaslin] Crowell has born two children and two are living [sic this is not correct as she has borne four children]. In her household are her 32-year-old Indiana-born daughter Effie and her 28-year-old Indiana-born plasterer son Wilber. Wilber has had no months without work in the past year. The family is living in a house that Louisa owns, free of mortgage. Everyone can read, write and speak English. Louisa's parents were born in Kentucky; Effie's and Wilber's father was born in New Jersey and their mother in Indiana.

In the 1910 US Federal Census for Franklin, Johnson, Indiana, 76-year-old Indiana-born widow Louisa [McCaslin] Crowell has born four children and two are living. These two are her daughters, 45-year-old public school teacher Alice and 41-year-old Effie who has no occupation. Also in the household is 30-year-old Kentucky-born stenographer Elizabeth Craig, whose relationship to the Crowells is not known.

Louisa J Crowell of 400 E Adams, Franklin, Johnson, Indiana died at 11 a.m. 13 Apr 1912 of bronchopneumonia. Dr R U Payne had attended her from 1-13 Apr 1912. She was female, white and a widow, occupation "house keeping," born 24 Mar 1833 in Indiana to James McCaslin and Elizabeth Carr, both born in Kentucky. The informant was Alice P Crowell (her oldest daughter) of Franklin, Indiana. Louisa was buried 15 Apr 1912 in Greenlawn Cemetery, Franklin, Johnson, Indiana; undertakers Barnhizer and Vandivier of Franklin, Indiana (Embalmer's License 1392).
