McCaslin, James W., Superintendent Evergreen Cemetery; born in Scott Co., Ind., Feb. 16, 1831; lived there about twenty-five years; came to Iowa in fall of 1856; has been engaged in farming, cooper business and dealing in stock; he has held town, school and road offices. Married Miss Elizabeth Tull, from Scott Co., Indiana, Feb. 21, 1852.

In the 1840 US Federal Census for Township Not Stated, Scott County, Indiana, Richards name is recorded as Richd McCastlin by the census taker, Els. English, assistant for Scott County. Richards household consists of one male between 5 and 10 (John R), two males between 10 and 15 (James W and Calvin S), one male between 30 and 40 (himself), one female under 5 (Elizabeth), two females between 5 and 10 (unidentified), one female between 10 and 15 (Margaret Jane) and one female between 30 and 40 (his wife, Lucy)

In the 1850 US Federal Census for Jennings, Scott, Indiana, Richard is not listed and is dead. He died sometime before 27 Feb 1844, when Stephen Rice brought relinquishment of right of next of kin by Lucy McCaslin, widow of the deceased. Stephen Rice was granted adminstration of the estate. Security was given by Reuben Rice. Stephen and Reuben are probably Lucys brothers. Lucy (age 44) is now the head of the McCaslin household, with personal property worth $1,000. Living with her are her sons, Calvin S (age 21 and a laborer with $100 of personal property), James W (age 20 and a farmer), John R (age 19), and Alexander (age 7) and her daughter Elizabeth (age 10).

In the 1860 US Federal Census for Taylor, Benton, Iowa, 29-year-old Indiana-born farmer J.W. McCaslin is living with his 25-year-old Indiana-born wife Elizabeth Tull McCaslin. They have no children. James owns $1,000 worth of real estate and $358 worth of personal property.

The second time on 15 June 1870, 38-year-old Indiana-born Jas W McCaslin is living with his wife, 34-year-old Indiana-born Elizbth [sic Elizabeth Tull] McCaslin. James is listed as "Street Commissioning" and Elizabeth as "Keeping House". James owns $1,000 worth of real estate and $650 worth of personal property.

In the 1880 US Federal Census for Vinton, Benton, Iowa, 49-year-old Indiana-born farmer Jas. W. {James W] and his 45-year-old wife Indiana-born Elizabeth [Tull] McCaslin have their nephew, 20-year-old Indiana-born carpenter Rinalda [sic Rindaldo] R. McCaslin living with them. Rinaldo is the son of James' brother John R. James' father was born in Indiana [sic] and his mother in New York. Elizabeth's father was born in Indiana and her mother in Kentucky. Rinaldo's parents were born in Indiana.

In the 1895 Iowa State Census for Vinton, Benton, Iowa, 53-year-old laborer James W and his 49-year-old wife Elizabeth [Tull] McCaslin are living on Wallace Street . James is entitled to vote. They came to Iowa from Indiana.

In the 1900 US Federal Census for Vinton, Benton, Iowa, 69-year-old farmer J W McCastin [McCaslin] is living on Wallace Street with his 65-year-old wife Elizabeth [Tull]. They have been married 53 years and have had no children. James owns his farm free of mortgage. Both James and Elizabeth can read, write and speak English. James' father was born in Kentucky and his mother in New York. Elizabeth's father was born in Indiana and her mother in Kentucky.

The Chronicle, Scottsburg, Scott, Indiana, Thursday, 27 Jun 1907 James McCaslin, a native of this county, died of paralysis on June 15 at his home in Vinton, Iowa. He was advanced in years.
